I’m excited to share a bit more about who I am and why I’ve created this page!
I am a preschool and elementary school SLP (Speech-Language Pathologist) living and working in North Idaho. I graduated with my Master’s of Science in Communication Disorders from Eastern Washington University in 2016. I spent the first 3 years of my career working in a private pediatric clinic where the majority of the kiddos I served were 2-4 years old, but ranged from 12 months to 15 years old. During my time in the clinic, I was able to build my skill set with the support of several other SLPs and be in close communication with occupational therapists, physical therapists, teachers, and family resource coordinators. We worked together on a daily basis to create therapy plans for supporting each individual child and their family.
It opened my eyes to how much the “real life” therapy world differs from the “textbook” therapy world. This multidisciplinary, whole child approach also ignited my passion for supporting children and families across the full span of childhood development, rather than just living in my speechie bubble. I loved being able to come along side parents and provide them with therapy activities that were realistic and tailored to their child and the resources they had available to them.
At the end of last August, I made the difficult decision to transition into being an SLP in the public school system. It has been a long transition to say the least. I have enjoyed being able to spend more quality time with my family, but the longer I’m away from the clinic, the more I realize I miss that connection with parents. I love my students and the flexibility that the school system provides, but I feel like there’s a gap between school and home that I haven’t figured out how to fill yet.
