If I had a dollar for every time I heard this one.

The hard truth? She probably won’t do more than that.

Family dynamics can determine so many aspects of your caregiving journey, and often times the “primary” family caregivers are not supported in the way that THEY would like to feel supported.

And I have to say….. I receive the most complaints about the physical caregiving aspect of support than anything else.

We really must understand, and accept, that some people will only offer you the support that is easiest for them. And if the physical responsibilities of caregiving are becoming too burdensome to bear, then a discussion about directing those financial resources towards additional support, or health/wellness care for yourself(the primary caregiver) is worth advocating for.

Are you a primary caregiver and feeling as though you’re not getting the support that you need? Or are you a distant caregiver who feels as though your efforts aren’t being recognized? Sound off below… it’s a safe space ☺️.

Occupational Therapists ensure that individuals are able to safely perform the activities that are necessary and important to them.

These activities are not limited to basic self-care tasks such as dressing and bathing, but include health management as well.
Per the CDC, approximately 90% of annual healthcare spending is towards chronic & mental health conditions.

"Health Management" is a key ADL within the Occupational Therapy Framework that can enable individuals to effectively manage their health, prevent functional decline, and reduce hospital readmissions.

And the average age is 47 years old for African-Americans, meaning that most primary caregivers in the AA community are possibly raising a family as well. They (we) are referred to as the “sandwich” generation.

Breaking down a problem in to smallest steps can help you pinpoint & address areas that are the most problematic, and important, FIRST.

Change can be overwhelming, and dropping a 📌in the problem spot is a great start.

I know that gets all the love these days, but hear this ☝🏾… Research shows that participating in activities that you enjoy can lower cortisol levels, boost endorphins, and preserve cognitive function. So remember to include a few goals for having fun in your 2022 resolutions!
