What does radical acceptance really mean?

In DBT, it is the practice of fully acknowledging reality as it is. While it does not mean approval or giving up, it can reduce suffering and support emotional regulation.

Andrea Schklar, LCSW, assistant director of the DBT recovery community for the Skyland Trail adult program, shares how this skill helps individuals move toward healing and growth.

February often highlights relationships and connection, but it is also a meaningful time to reflect on self-love as a foundation of mental health.

Self-love is not indulgent or selfish. It is a skill we build over time that supports resilience, emotional balance, and overall well-being. During seasons of stress or transition, strengthening this foundation can make a lasting difference for individuals, families, and the communities we serve.

Our Story

About Skyland Trail Based in Atlanta, Skyland Trail is a nationally recognized nonprofit mental health treatment organization serving adults ages 18 and older. We offer expert, evidence-based psychiatric care alongside a compassionate, holistic path to wellness. This powerful mix makes Skyland Trail a different kind of mental health solution. Few things can be as overwhelming and frustrating as mental illness – or finding effective treatments. At Skyland Trail, we get it. Which is why we take a different approach to helping adults with mental health issues. Located in Atlanta, Skyland Trail is a nationally recognized nonprofit mental health treatment organization serving adults ages 18 and older. We’re not a hospital or lock-down institution, we’re one of the nation's top mental health treatment centers – a voluntary treatment community of clients finding new ways to overcome the limitations of their illness and reclaim their lives. But success is built on a two-way commitment – we’re committed to our patients and we ask our patients to commit to our approach. Each client has to put in the time and effort needed to make real and sustainable progress. As a long-term residential treatment facility, we’re serious about healing and we’re passionate about the community we serve.
