Spring Produce & Bladder Health: Spring and summer result in peak-season fruits and vegetables. Do you know what foods support your bladder health and which are best avoided?
Bladder-friendly foods from the garden:
- Cucumber: thanks to its high water content, it has a diuretic effect and helps cleanse the urinary tract.
- Asparagus: acts as a diuretic and is a source of valuable nutrients.
- Parsley: has a diuretic effect and helps detoxify the body.
- Chives: rich in vitamin C and vitamin A. Vitamin C has anti-inflammatory and immunostimulant properties and acidifies the urine, making it difficult for bacteria to multiply. Vitamin A supports the urinary tract mucous membrane immunity.
- Carrot: packed with vitamin A and beta-carotene. Vitamin A supports mucous membrane immunity, the first line of defense against pathogens.
Early fruits and vegetables to consume in moderation:
- Sorrel: rich in vitamin C and has a diuretic effect, which is beneficial. Unfortunately, sorrel leaves contain oxalates, which can build up in the kidneys and bladder, causing kidney stones.
- Rhubarb: contains oxalic acid, which in excess can irritate the urinary tract.
- Spinach: like rhubarb, contains oxalic acid and should not be eaten in excess. Remember that your body's reaction to different foods is individual, so it's worth observing how your bladder reacts to them. A healthy, balanced diet rich in water is key to well-being!
