Being a doula isn’t just about holding babies, or mothers, or even families. It’s about holding all of them and the communities they’re in and represent. The best way we can do that is to impress upon policy makers and the powers that be, the importance of passing bills that matter like licensure for midwives, ALL MIDWIVES, and allocating funds to keep rural labor and delivery wards open, research, and programs that directly affect the increasing maternal mortality rates of Black women despite the decline in those rates of our white counterparts.
It was an honor and a pleasure to attend yesterday’s Maternal Health Day at the capitol. I will continue to do everything within my capabilities to rally for better outcomes for women and babies and the families negatively affected every single day.
