Big emotions aren’t “bad behavior.” They’re communication. When kids struggle with meltdowns, shutdowns, or big reactions, they’re often telling us something they don’t yet have the words for. Building self-awareness and social awareness at home helps children understand their feelings, regulate their emotions, and connect more confidently with others.

In a recent family forum, our counselors shared practical tools parents can start using right away, for example: naming emotions and validating feelings, grounding exercises, movement breaks, and co-regulation strategies that help kids feel safe and supported. Because when adults stay regulated, kids learn how to regulate too.
