Hyperindependent? Toxic masculinity? How about a reframe to survival strategies that were learned and passed down from our ancestors!
Rest is resistance.
And it always has been.
A few weeks ago, I visited the National Museum of African American History and Culture in DC, and it reminded me of something we don’t talk about enough: our ancestors didn’t get the luxury of softness. Showing emotion, slowing down, or resting could have cost them their lives. Survival required constant strength despite their pain.
That history didn’t disappear. It lives in our bodies. And we're reminded of it every single day while being Black in America.
So many of us Black men and women are still operating in survival mode: overworking, pushing through exhaustion, and feeling guilty for resting. But we don’t have to do that anymore.
We get to be gentle.
We get to slow down.
We get to take breaks.
We get to rest.
Because rest is not lazines, it’s healing.
Rest is nervous system regulation.
Rest is reclaiming what was denied to our ancestors.
If you’re feeling burned out, overwhelmed, or stuck in a cycle of overworking, therapy can be a space where someone holds you, centers you, and reminds you that you matter.
You deserve rest.
You deserve care.
You deserve support.
Tell me in the comments: How are you prioritizing rest right now?
Check out my VLOG for the rest of my reflections about how incredible our ancestors were and we are as Black folks. We are truly DOPE!
