Endometriosis is a disorder affecting 10% of women in which the tissues that lines the inside of the uterus grows outside of the uterus in places like the Fallopian tubes, ovaries, bowel and tissues lining the pelvic.
Endometriosis can cause severe pains during menstrual period but this doesn’t correlate with the severity of the disease. When a woman with endometriosis has her period, she has bleeding from both the cells and tissue inside the uterus, and also from the cells and tissue outside the uterus. When blood touches these other organs inside the abdomen, it can cause inflammation and irritation, creating pain. Scar tissue can also develop from the endometriosis and contribute to the pain.
What are some symptoms of endometriosis:
* Pain
* Very painful menstrual cramps.
* Chronic (long-term) pain in the lower back and pelvis
* Pain during or after s*x.
* Painful bowel movements or pain when urinating during menstrual periods.
* Bleeding or spotting between menstrual periods.
* Infertility
* Tiredness
* Diarrhea, bloating, constipation
* Nausea
The severity of symptoms is often not directly connected to how much disease tissue you have. Some women might not even realise they have endometriosis until they are trying to conceive and get checked.
What causes endometriosis?
There is no single test for endometriosis unfortunately, as it symptoms are similar to other conditions but your doctor might perform a pelvic and abdominal exam. While the exact reason why endometriosis occurs still remains unknown and there’s no cure for it, it can be managed.
Treatment
Treatment for endometriosis usually involves medication or surgery. These include hormonal birth control pills, pain medication, laparoscopy. The approach you and your doctor choose will depend on how severe your signs and symptoms are.
