OCD Awareness Week
•••
Today’s Topic: Effective Treatment Strategies
•••
OCD is a serious mental health problem that needs effective treatment. OCD tends to be a chronic condition that comes and goes in severity across the lifespan. People with OCD may need just one episode of evidence-based treatment or they may find they need on-going or episodic treatment to keep the worst of OCD symptoms at bay.
•••
Experts recommend people with OCD begin specialized treatment immediately. Yet, it often takes over a decade to get the right help due to lack of awareness among the public as well as medical and mental health providers. Unfortunately, many people with OCD, and their providers, waste valuable time, energy, and money on treatments that are not specific to OCD. For example, some types of trauma therapy (like EMDR), hypnotherapy, and general talk therapy may not help or may make symptoms worse.
•••
People with OCD need specific evidence-based treatments delivered by mental health providers with specialized knowledge and training. A type of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) called exposure and response prevention (ERP) is recommended.Another therapy called acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) may also help if provided in conjunction with ERP. Sometimes people with OCD benefit from taking medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

Join Atlanta CBT to celebrate influential black psychologists throughout Black History Month.
This week we are highlighting Inez Beverly Prosser, Ph.D.
Dr. Inez believed there was power in education and had a strong passion for teaching. Growing up in Texas, she experienced the impact of educational segregation in black and brown students. Dr. Prosser’s dissertation focused on educational racism and the impact this had on students of color.
Dr. Inez Beverly Prosser’s life ended way too early as she died in a car accident. Her death was a huge loss for the psychological and educational world as she advocated for blacks to obtain scholarships and to continue into higher education. Her dissertation conclusions were controversial in the decades leading to the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision in 1954.
Today, we honor the life of Dr. Inez Beverly Prosser. May we all be inspired to advocate for equal, equitable, and just education for students and people of color and recognize the systemic ways racism impacts our world.

February is Black History Month!
At Atlanta CBT, we believe it is necessary to highlight influential black psychologists throughout Black History Month.
The first psychologist we are highlighting is Francis C. Sumner, Ph.D. Dr. Sumner graduated from Clark Atlanta University, approximately 3 miles from our current office. Dr. Francis Cecil Sumner studied racial bias and was the first black to receive a Ph.D. degree in Psychology.
Francis C. Sumner, Ph.D. is also known as the “Father of Black Psychology.”
Dr. Sumner’s research findings regarding racial disparities in psychology still remain present today.
Atlanta CBT recognizes these disparities, actively participates, and financially supports training for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) clinicians to better meet the needs and increase the access to care for blacks and people of color.
Today, we honor the Father of Black Psychology, Dr. Francis Cecil Sumner. May we all be inspired to advocate to end racial bias and disparities in psychology.

Hello! I am Dr. Leah Farrell-Carnahan, PhD, Licensed Clinical Psychologist. I own and practice psychology at Atlanta CBT in Inman Park.
I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help people manage anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, insomnia, depression, and other concerns. While CBT is no panacea, it has been found to be an effective way to help people with many problems.
I was very fortunate to train at one of the top clinical psychology PhD programs in the nation to develop clinical and scientific cognitive behavioral skills. I am also trained in health education, health psychology, and the art and science of motivation. I incorporate a gentle and non-judgmental counseling style into CBT called Motivational Interviewing. Further, as a health psychologist, I am aware of the dynamic interplay between body, mind, and community/environment. I bring all these perspectives to bear when working with clients. I always look for the unique strengths in my clients and help them explore these while developing awareness of the ways certain ways of thinking and acting can hold them back emotionally, physically, and relationally. Also, I am LGBTQetc. affirming psychologist.
I relocated to Atlanta in 2019 from Richmond, Virginia where I had a thriving private practice from 2012-2019 called Behavior Works of Virginia and worked for seven years helping Veterans in the Department of Veterans Affairs, both clinically and at the larger national programmatic level. Prior to that I worked in academic medicine and even in corporate America. I have lived in rural and urban areas up and down the east coast from Charlotte, Vermont to Boone, North Carolina, to Boston, and NYC, etc. Personally, I am an active and curious person and I am enjoying exploring all that intown living and working has to offer. I look forward to meeting and helping you!
