Oftentimes, the most difficult subjects to address are the ones that need addressing. This is one of those. The reality of substance use disorder is that those who drink or drug to excess may overdose. That can lead to physical damage, incarceration or death. But when Overdose Awareness Day was created in Australia in 2001, it was to bring attention to those who struggle and raise awareness about the disease of substance use disorder with the objective of effecting change. Overdose can be prevented. There are solutions. Education and treatment programs must be prioritized over criminalizing drug use. Practice radical empathy. Families Anonymous recognizes Overdose Awareness Day on Aug. 31. We remember those we have lost to this disease and pray for those who struggle today. Learn more and help end the stigma with FA.

Cultivating an attitude of gratitude is easy when you're outdoors. Working as a Horticultural Therapist and being a member of the American Horticultural Therapy Association aligns members, students, HT participants, and professionals with other like minded individuals who demonstrate a daily appreciation and respect for the natural world.

What aspect of horticultural therapy are you most grateful for today?

"What beautiful thoughts to begin a day. As an HTR working with others struggling with depression and anxiety I find clients often experience the outdoors as uplifting and calming. The activities can be simple; results profound." - Jeanne Schultz, HTR, AHTA Board Member

How will you connect to nature today?

Helping people enjoy the outdoors is a privilege!

🌱 In horticultural therapy, nature is experienced with every sense—not just sight. For individuals with visual impairments, the textures of leaves, the scent of herbs, the warmth of sunlight, and the rhythm of planting offer meaningful ways to connect, heal, and grow.

At the American Horticultural Therapy Association, we support accessible, inclusive garden spaces where everyone can thrive.

👐 Have you experienced a garden through touch, smell, or sound? Share your favorite sensory moment in the comments!

Nature Boosts the Brain

Nature Is Fuel for Focus, Learning, and Mental Clarity
Immersion in nature and hands-on plant care has a measurable impact on cognitive health.
✔️ Studies show improvements in test scores
✔️ Enhanced attention spans and working memory
✔️ Greater focus, especially for students with ADHD
✔️ Boosted serotonin levels to support emotional balance

When students step into the garden, they’re not just getting fresh air—they’re resetting their nervous systems and activating brain pathways that support learning, regulation, and well-being.
Horticultural therapy grows more than plants—it grows capacity for success.

Meet the Horticultural Therapy Hero of the Month: The semi-succulent “Vicks” plant. You can engage all of the senses with it and there are formations on the back of the leaves that resemble trees, further illustrating personal growth. Grateful to the clients at William’s House for being open to growth.
