Helping people enjoy the outdoors is a privilege!

🌱 In horticultural therapy, nature is experienced with every sense—not just sight. For individuals with visual impairments, the textures of leaves, the scent of herbs, the warmth of sunlight, and the rhythm of planting offer meaningful ways to connect, heal, and grow.

At the American Horticultural Therapy Association, we support accessible, inclusive garden spaces where everyone can thrive.

👐 Have you experienced a garden through touch, smell, or sound? Share your favorite sensory moment in the comments!

Nature Boosts the Brain

Nature Is Fuel for Focus, Learning, and Mental Clarity
Immersion in nature and hands-on plant care has a measurable impact on cognitive health.
✔️ Studies show improvements in test scores
✔️ Enhanced attention spans and working memory
✔️ Greater focus, especially for students with ADHD
✔️ Boosted serotonin levels to support emotional balance

When students step into the garden, they’re not just getting fresh air—they’re resetting their nervous systems and activating brain pathways that support learning, regulation, and well-being.
Horticultural therapy grows more than plants—it grows capacity for success.

The definition of surrender begins, "To yield to the power, control, or possession of another." It doesn't say anything about weakness. It doesn't say anything about hopelessness. Many of us grew up with certain values that we were told would make us successful in life. Toughness. Resilience. Never giving up. Never surrendering. But surrendering is NOT a weakness when it comes to those who have a friend or loved one suffering from substance use disorder. This is part of the counter-intuitiveness of the Families Anonymous program. Surrendering is simply an acknowledgment that the power of somebody else's recovery is NOT in our hands. Surrendering doesn't mean we don't love them or we're a horrible person, abdicating our responsibilities. It only means we are turning over what is NOT in our control to a Higher Power of our choosing. Surrendering doesn't mean we're giving up hope or we've stopped caring about another individual's future. It simply means we are shifting our focus to only the things that are in our control -- our thoughts and our actions. We become stronger when we surrender, not weaker. We are not standing on a track, waving a white flag when it comes to our qualifier. We are simply acknowledging that we're on a different track.

Meet the Horticultural Therapy Hero of the Month: The semi-succulent “Vicks” plant. You can engage all of the senses with it and there are formations on the back of the leaves that resemble trees, further illustrating personal growth. Grateful to the clients at William’s House for being open to growth.
