In 2021, teens and young adults made up 19% of all new HIV cases in the U.S, according to the CDC. While HIV is preventable in 2025, it's hard to stop HIV from being transmitted among young people because many don’t know much about it or how to protect themselves while enjoying a pleasurable s*x life. Some of the reasons for this:

- Not using condoms regularly. Condoms help protect against HIV and other infections.
- A lot of young people have other infections (STIs), which can make it easier to get or transmit HIV.
- Stigma, which prevents people from testing for HIV.

Until a vaccine that prevents HIV becomes available (which we're working on), we will continue our efforts to address HIV prevention with innovative methods, such as injectable PrEP.

On the eve of Stonewall Day 2024, we pause and reflect on the meaning of Pride and celebrate the progress made since the first bricks were thrown by LGBTQ+ icons Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. The LGBTQ+ community has been instrumental in advocating for more inclusive practices in HIV research and we have come a long way in understanding and treating HIV/AIDS as a result. Though groundbreaking research has yet to yield an effective vaccine that will prevent HIV, the spirit of hope and perseverance modeled by the LGBTQ+ community fuels us to continue striving for a future free of new HIV cases. Happy Pride from all of us at the Emory-CDC HIV/AIDS Clinical Trials Unit.

Transgender people face many challenges which impact their ability to seek, receive, and remain engaged in HIV care. In addition, there are many prevention challenges that impact the HIV health outcomes for some transgender people. Racism, discrimination, stigma, transphobic discrimination, medical mistrust, unmet gender affirmation needs are just a few examples of such barriers. On National Transgender HIV Testing Day, we not only affirm these truths, but also highlight the importance of addressing these as social determinants of HIV. Testing is one way to address the disproportionate impact of HIV on Transgender people, but ending the HIV epidemic requires a multi-pronged approach (prevention, treatment, suppression).
Today, we recommit ourselves to continue striving for equitable access to HIV research, which we hope will eventually lead to a breakthrough in the form of a preventive vaccine. Such a breakthrough will have lasting impacts on all communities, especially on those most marginalized and affected by HIV.
