With it being National Mental Health Awareness and Mother's Day Weekend, we thought we would share some truths in hope to help the mothers in our lives feel less alone in their struggle.
1 in 8 mothers experience symptoms of maternal depression.
Worldwide about 10% of pregnant women and 13% of women who have just given birth experience a mental disorder, primarily depression. In developing countries this is even higher, i.e. 15.6% during pregnancy and 19.8% after child birth.
1 in 5 women on average suffer from maternal mental health disorders.
disorders are much more than the baby blues and consist of a range of mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, OCD and PTSD. Mothers need a strong support system and access to treatment and/or therapy to help them overcome these realities. Mothers are resilient and often the last people to think of themselves but this shouldn't mean these issues should be overlooked.
