Buying something for your business just because it's a write-off isn't the crazy tax hack it's hyped up to be! 💸

Let's say you have a perfectly good laptop, but you see a new $2,000 laptop that you justify as ordinary + necessary for your business.

If you're taxed at 20%, you're getting $400 in tax savings... but here's the catch:

You just spent $1,600 that you didn't necessarily need to spend! 📉

When I work on tax planning strategies with my clients, the goal is to look at the BIGGER picture to make tax moves that align with their overall financial goals.

If a new purchase moves the needle in your business, amazing! Write it off and celebrate the perks of being a business owner. 🥳

❌ But, don't get caught up in playing the write-off game for things your business doesn't actually need.

Listen, I'm all about maxing out your retirement accounts (it's a win-win to save for the future and potentially save on taxes!).

But, your accountant is doing you a disservice if they tell you to max out your accounts without asking these questions:

→ Do you have high-interest debt that needs to be paid?
→ Do you have an adequate emergency fund in place?
→ Will you need this cash in the next few years?
→ Is it smarter to defer taxes today or consider your future tax bracket?

Saving for retirement is great, but if you end up needing that money before retirement, early withdrawals can come with potential penalties and tax implications!

ou are responsible for telling your employer how much federal tax to withhold from your paycheck... and this is CRUCIAL for avoiding surprise tax bills or oversized refunds. 💸

If you’ve had a life change (like a marriage, baby, or a new side hustle), let HR know that you'd like to update your Form W-4!

You are responsible for telling your employer how much federal tax to withhold from your paycheck... and this is CRUCIAL for avoiding surprise tax bills or oversized refunds. 💸eur

🐾 Your dog is 100% a part of your family, but unfortunately, the IRS doesn't recognize them as a dependent...

So, how can you legitimately write off some of those pet expenses? Swipe to learn a few ways! ➡️

Ok, so what isn't deductible?

Claiming that your Chihuahua is a “guard dog” for your Etsy biz and trying to write off all of their food and vet bills... not okay! ❌

If you’re paying for childcare this summer so you can work (or job hunt), read up on the Child & Dependent Care Credit!

You may be eligible for a tax credit of 35% on qualifying costs (up to $3,000 or $6,000, depending on the number of qualifying dependents you have).

📲 Send this post to a parent who needs to know this info!

Please consult with your tax accountant to determine if your childcare costs qualify for this credit.

If an IRS auditor asks you what that $20 Starbucks charge was for last October, can you answer that question? 🤔

Here's what you should be documenting for each client coffee meeting:

☕ Who you met with
☕ What you discussed (aka your business purpose)
☕ When + where the meeting happened
☕ The amount you spend

PRO TIP: Write all this info down on your Starbucks receipt, snap a photo, and upload it to your Google Drive "Receipts" folder!

Want to know the #1 reason business owners ignore their taxes? ⤵️
It's the fear of "doing something wrong".
Between the deadlines, the receipts, and ever-changing tax laws... it can be A LOT! 🙃

You owe it to yourself to have someone in your corner (like me!) helping you get caught up, stay compliant, and actually understand how you can legally pay less. 💸

Not every subscription is a write-off, even if you *sometimes* use it while you're working. 😬

Canva for marketing? Probably deductible.
QuickBooks for your business's bookkeeping? Ordinary + necessary.

Spotify? Because you have to listen to a true crime podcast while you work? Not so much. ❌

If it's not ordinary and necessary for your business, it's probably not going to fly with the IRS.

Confused about what counts? That’s what I’m here for. 👋

Been told you can't file your personal tax return because you're still waiting on K-1s?
Let me decode that sentence for you! ⤵️

If you’re part of a partnership, S corp, estate, or trust, your Schedule K-1 form holds key info you need to file your return.

So, how do you get a Schedule K-1? 👀

The entity you're invested in has to file its tax return first, but if they've extended, they could have until September to do this!

Keep reading this post for a further breakdown of Schedule K-1s and their implication on your return.
