Please take a moment to understand why Doulas are so essential. Doulas will be the person that stands in the gap. Slows down the pace when you don’t have the words. To advocate for you when all the health professionals are doing the job that they have been trained to do but are leaving your feeling, needs, and wants out of the equation.
Unbiased care and compassion are apart of the training, but we are often seeing that it’s being eliminated for various reason.
Hey Mama, You can bring your support with you! Let us help you by standing in the gap and holding space for you.
Thanks Birth Uprising for such an eye opening and beautifully written post.

There’s a huge disconnect in medicine, and mothers are paying the price.
So many people go into hospital work (I’m not going to call it health care, because it’s not about health) truly wanting to help people. They see their profession as one of healing, where they take something broken and nurture it back to health. And medicine can be that if, for example, you’ve been in a serious accident. But birth is a natural, physiological process, not an accident or something to fix.
Over time so many hospital staff get worn down - they’re overworked, under-appreciated, and their facilities are under-staffed. They have high student loan debt from their education, and can’t afford to leave their position, even if it’s sucking the life out of them. They started out with good intentions, but have become disillusioned along the way. The patients they once saw as people deserving of compassion and true care, become numbers, become just a job.
Birth is one of the most important and life-changing events that ever happens to a woman. Even if a c-section becomes necessary, it doesn’t have to be a cold, callous procedure where the woman giving birth is afraid, crying, and not even acknowledged. No one should ever be treated this way. It costs no more time or money to look at someone as a person rather than a case number and to ease their fears.
