Why do headaches happen? Here's what's actually going on.
Most of us have had a headache at some point — but have you ever wondered what's actually causing that pain?
Headaches aren't just "in your head." They're real, physical events, and they can be triggered by a surprisingly wide range of things.
The most common culprits:
💧 Dehydration — Even mild dehydration can cause your brain to temporarily shrink away from the skull, triggering pain. Drinking water is often the first fix for a reason.
😴 Sleep disruption — Too little sleep, too much sleep, or an irregular schedule can all set off a headache. Your brain likes routine.
😤 Stress and tension — Stress causes the muscles in your neck, scalp, and shoulders to tighten. That tension travels — and turns into a headache.
🍷 Food and drink triggers — Caffeine (or caffeine withdrawal), alcohol, aged cheeses, processed meats, and artificial sweeteners are known triggers for many people.
🌡️ Hormonal changes — For many women, headaches are closely tied to their menstrual cycle, pregnancy, or menopause. Estrogen fluctuations are a major migraine trigger.
💡 Sensory overload — Bright lights, loud sounds, and strong smells can activate pain pathways in the brain, especially for migraine sufferers.
🧠 What's happening in the brain — During a migraine, blood vessels in the brain dilate and nerve pathways become hypersensitive. It's not just a bad headache — it's a neurological event.
When is a headache more than just a headache?
If your headaches are happening 4+ days a month, waking you up at night, or not responding to over-the-counter medication — that's your body telling you something needs attention.
That's exactly what we're here for. The Southeast Center for Headaches specializes in diagnosing and treating chronic and complex headaches, with same/next-day appointments available when you can't wait.
