Listening objectively with an open mind and heart doesn’t mean abandoning your truth.
It means creating space to understand before you react.
To hear before you defend.
To gather clarity before you draw conclusions.

And don’t get it twisted.

But it will reduce the baggage you carry forward.

A good heart doesn’t just love deeply.
It endures deeply.
Sometimes too deeply.

The danger isn’t having a good heart.
The danger is confusing patience with purpose, loyalty with obligation, and empathy with self-abandonment.

A good heart needs boundaries the same way a strong body needs rest.
Without them, even something pure gets worn down.

1. Made sure I went outside and played with friends. My mother did an amazing job of nurturing and loving me, but she never just let me sit up under her. She made sure I went outside and played with the other boys in the neighborhood. 🌳🏀

2. Put me in programs led by solid men.
I played sports all through grade school, coached by men that looked like me and had a passion for the community. I was also a member of the 100 Black Men youth organization. 🏅

3. Almost every birthday she gifted me a book on manhood and leadership, giving preference to black authors but not limited to them. 📚✨

4. She always kept an open path of communication. I’ve always been comfortable talking to my mother about just about anything. 🗣️💬
