Q: What is the best test to determine if a child has been exposed to lead, and why?
A: A blood lead level (BLL) test is the gold standard, since most children with lead exposure have no symptoms.
A capillary (fingerstick) test gives quick, same-day screening results, but any elevated level should be confirmed with a venous test.
Venous samples analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) are more accurate, though results may take a few days.

Q: If a child’s blood lead level is very high, what kind of therapy might be used to lower the lead burden?
A: Chelation therapy may be used to bind lead in the blood and enhance its excretion through urine. In addition, supportive care should be provided based on the patient’s symptoms.
Ensuring optimal nutritional support is also important — deficiencies in nutrients such as iron, calcium, or zinc can increase lead absorption and worsen health outcomes.
Finally, identifying and eliminating the source of lead exposure is essential to prevent further poisoning.
