On International Day, Chispa families came together in a powerful celebration of culture, unity, and resilience.

From traditional dishes like pozole, arroz con gandules, and empanadas to vibrant cultural outfits, music, and dance, families honored their heritage while passing traditions down to the next generation.

The day was enriched by the dedication of volunteers and the support of Amerigroup, who provided essential health resources—reminding us that cultural celebration and community well-being go hand in hand.

The impact was clear: families felt empowered, children embraced cultural pride, and our community was reminded that diversity is our greatest strength.

🎉 This September 12, Families First proudly celebrates 135 years of strengthening Atlanta families!

Our story began in 1890 with the Leonard Street Orphans’ Home—founded to care for African American girls without family support. Over the decades, we joined forces with the Florence Crittenton Home, Associated Charities, Atlanta Child’s Home, and the Child Welfare Association—coming together to build a stronger, united foundation of compassion, advocacy, and commitment to family well-being.

Through the 20th century, Families First pioneered foster care, adoption, counseling, and prevention programs, while championing racial integration and professionalizing child welfare services. Each chapter strengthened our role as a trusted leader in building resilient families.

Today, 135 years later, we serve more than 16,000 children and families annually through mental health services, foster care and adoption programs, early learning and parenting support, and our innovative Navigator Care Model.

💜 Thank you to every partner, donor, volunteer, and family who has been part of this extraordinary journey. Together, we’re writing the next chapter—one of resilience, innovation, and lasting impact.

We are still dancing on air. 💫 Families First is honored to receive not one but two awards from the Atlanta Women's Foundation: the Sue Wieland Embracing Possibilities Grant and the Two-Generation Grant Initiative.

We are deeply grateful for AWF’s generosity and steadfast commitment to empowering families and creating lasting change. At a time when nonprofit support is more important than ever, this investment helps us continue our mission to strengthen family resiliency.

Thank you to the Atlanta Women’s Foundation for believing in Families First and the families we serve. 💜

✨ Did you know? ✨

Georgia’s first Black millionaire, Alonzo Herndon, once served as President of the Leonard Street Orphanage a home founded to care for African American girls without family support.

Born into slavery in 1858, Herndon rose from humble beginnings to become the founder of the Atlanta Life Insurance Company, one of the nation’s most successful Black-owned businesses. At the time of his passing in 1927, he was Atlanta’s wealthiest Black citizen.

But his legacy wasn’t just in business — it was in generosity. His early philanthropy helped inspire 135 years of giving toward families and communities in need, a tradition we proudly carry forward today.

This , we honor Alonzo Herndon and the countless trailblazers whose generosity continues to shape our community!

🎉 We’re honored to be named a 2025 Awardee for Advancing Minority Mental Health by the American Psychiatric Association Foundation ()!

Thanks to this award, the Vance Center for Behavioral Health is providing 25+ counseling and psychiatric sessions to clients with the greatest need—including those who are uninsured.

From our CEO, Paula M. Moody:
“Addressing the under-treatment of mental illness in minority communities requires a comprehensive approach... By tackling these issues in partnership, we can create a more equitable and supportive mental healthcare system for all.”

Together, we’re breaking barriers and building better access to mental health care for every family.
