TIPS FOR NEW RESIDENT PHYSICIANS✨
1. Create systems (meal prep, laundry services, fitness routines, digital folders for important documents) that will make your life easier and more streamlined. Less time = more need for organization.
2. Subscribe to the podcast. Make smart money moves from day 1! I have learned sooooo much from these amazing doctors!
3. Find your time to rest, but don’t sleep every single day off. Become a tourist in your new city. Build community and find your pockets of joy. Let me know if you want my NYC to-do list!
4. Get to know your colleagues, but be careful with what you share at first. Not everyone is your friend☕️
5. If you consider yourself a content creator, be mindful about how/when/if you share that information. Many have their own hangups and preconceived notions about “medfluencers.” Do you. Get your coin. Know the social media policies of your program. And never be afraid to block people.
6. Document everything. Everything. Self-advocacy begins with proof. Forward important emails to your personal email address.
7. Have fun and learn all you can!! You’re really about to be someone’s doctor!!

Outfits lately✨I believe in always having something to look forward to: a nice dinner out, a family hangout, an art gallery tour, an author talk. For each city I’ve lived in, I’ve had a bucket list. I was only 10 or so items shy of completing my list for NYC. Atlanta has changed so much since I moved and came back. I’ve started treating myself to a new restaurant each weekend. Should I share my list? Let me know! Always have something to look forward to. Big or small. Look fashionable while doing it. That’s the message✨

Grad school memory: Everything connects!! Stop allowing yourself to believe something was a wasted experience. I was really down about not being able to apply to med school right out of undergrad. My science gpa wasn’t where it needed to be. I had changed my major to History, stayed in the pre-med track, and took on an African American Studies minor. When I applied for my Master of Public Health program, my interviewers asked me, “So what does African American Studies have to do with public health?” I was able to speak intelligently about redlining, gentrification, the GI bill, and the like. As I got up to leave, one faculty member called my interview “Refreshing.” I’ll never forget it. That Masters in Public Health led me to be advised about the Masters in Science that would increase my gpa and MCAT score. That second Masters got me into med school. I still use both degrees to inform my approach to patients. Life isn’t always linear. Make plans, check with God, and leave room for flexibility!

On my stories, I’ve been talking about archivable pieces and how I so enjoy adding them to my wardrobe. With this term, I’m talking unique, eclectic pieces l’ll keep and wear forever. This jacket (and matching hat!!) from is one of those pieces! The thick, quality fabric, the hood with the wrap around neck tie, the hanging pockets on the front and the back?! Beyond good. I don’t own anything else like this. Truly one of one. You will see me styling this coat often!

Med School Memory:
During all the chaos of struggling through 2nd year, I received quite a few emails from the powers that be. I was doing all I could to keep my faith and my dream alive. In response to one email, I did not write any words. Instead, I sent a YouTube music video for Maurette Brown Clark’s “It Ain’t Over.”😂😩😭I encourage you to listen to the song if you’re unfamiliar. I was definitely called into a meeting on that one😂and instructed not to send anymore music videos. I was told through that song, I’d called administration haters and enemies of progress. Yes, I know it was inappropriate. No, I would not do that today. STILL, I am just so grateful to God and the tenacious, BOLD, faith-filled girl I was in my 20s especially. 20-something Anya?! Oh yea. Ask about her. I thank her daily❤️💪🏾

Outfits lately✨I recently created a photo album in my phone entitled “Girl, Wear This.” There, I house my easy go-to looks so I can make getting dressed a quicker and more seamless process. Highly recommend! Also, knowing the outfit silouhette that best complements You is very helpful. I’m a 90s girl through and through, so I love outfits where the fit is loose on the top and fitted on the bottom or fitted on the top and loose on the bottom. And I love a meannnnnnn jacket or coat! Know your silouhette. Make getting dressed easy and fun❤️❤️
