I turn 49 today. i’m not sure how that’s possible- I feel somewhere between 16-30-something most of the time. Age is funny because we are told it’s something to fear, and yet as you experience it, it is rather liberating to realize i’ve been alive and have made it for almost half a century!

Today I spent the day meandering through a beautiful town in coastal Maine. How did I even get here?? I am full of gratitude. I’m proud of the girl that I was, she went through quite a bit to get here; I’m proud of the woman I am and am becoming. Nothing about me is perfect, including the relationship I have with myself but i’m really proud of the commitment I made to healing myself and loving myself through recovery and life many years ago, that commitment has brought me to where I am today. The relationship we have with ourselves is probably the most powerful and important relationship we will ever cultivate in this life. ❤️ May this be the best year yet. 😊🙌

Burnout.

It's a cultural right of passage at this point in our evolution. I wish it weren't this way, but as far as I can see, it is happening to more people than it isn't. I just don't think our bodies were designed to live at the speed our culture is demanding.

I am not impervious to this at all, in fact, I have been dancing with burnout experiences for the better part of the last decade. I try to apply all of my tools, and to practice what I preach. I recently downsized my life, left the busy urban environment for a life in a smaller town, with a slower space that gives me connection to nature and room to think. And even now it is still hard to disconnect and find my inner balance. Barring completely going off grid (which just isn't in the cards for me:), there is no escaping the demands of this world. I realized that you can only change so much “out there”; the real work is internal.

This world demands our attention 24/7, and there is very little room for just “being”. It is very hard to carve out the space to clear your mind and reconnect with your soul. Those of us who are trying are doing our best, but its hard to catch your breath when you are caught up in the inertia of a cultural norm.

The cultural demand for hyper-activity is unconscious. It is in the body, stored as nervous systems that are stuck in and running on sympathetic activation. It is internalized as all of the “shoulds” we run in our minds as expectations of ourselves throughout the day.

It is neither our fault, nor sign of anything “wrong” with us when we experience burnout, but it is our responsibility to take care of ourselves. If we don't, the world is not going to slow down and no one is coming to save us. We must prioritize ourselves, and set boundaries against the demands and norms that don't. I wrote a recent blog about it, and I hope it can help you reconnect with your desire to choose how you want to live, and how you want to take care of yourself in a world that doesn't prioritize true balance.

You are worth it.

I used to work all the time. I was constantly taking on new projects, joining this board and that club. It was only when my body began to talk to me, telling me I had to stop, that I began to create boundaries and learn to slow down.

I always find resistance whenever I stumble upon the thing my soul is calling for me to do. It almost is comical at this point, as though the resistance is a signal to me that, “yup…this is the thing that needs me”. It’s a crazy 😝 making set up at times, and believe me, I do not do this stuff with ease. I kick and scream and run away…but I am telling you, if you’re on this path of growth there is nowhere to run. You will always come back to the same place, the invitation to face the thing you fear, the place you resist, and move through. To meet yourself at a deeper level - in newness and depth on the other side. I know you can. we can together 💕💕.

Shame will cause anyone to abandon even their most precious resource. It is as mighty and dangerous as any rifle or sword. And it is used to keep us all from being sovereign, autonomous and steals our agency. Question the very thing you are ashamed of. Somewhere in that false narrative is your portal back to yourself.

My client's sometimes see burnout as a personal failure or a flaw in one's character. However, it is crucial to recognize that burnout is not an indication that something is wrong with you. Instead, it serves as a vital message from your body, signaling an imbalance in your environment.

When the body experiences burnout, it is essentially communicating that the demands of the current environment exceed its capacity to cope. This can stem from various sources such as too much on one's plate, lack of support, or even a misalignment between personal values and culture. Recognizing burnout as a symptom rather than a flaw encourages more compassion, and that's always a good thing.

In today's fast-paced world, the human body is constantly bombarded with a relentless stream of information and stimuli. However, it's important to recognize that our bodies were not designed to handle such continuous input around the clock. The natural rhythm of our biological systems is based on cycles of activity and rest, aligning with the day-night cycle of our environment.

Historically, humans have lived in sync with the sun, waking with its rise and winding down as it sets. The advent of artificial light and technology has disrupted this natural order, often leading to over-stimulation and stress. Our brains, while incredibly capable, require downtime to process information, consolidate memories, and repair themselves. Constant exposure to screens and notifications can lead to cognitive overload, reducing our ability to focus, think creatively, and make decisions.

Embracing periods of silence and inactivity, whether through regular breaks, digital detoxes, or mindful practices, can help re calibrate our systems. By honoring the design of the human body and its need for rest, we honor ourselves.

Therapy isn't always about feeling "better"; sometimes it involves feeling uncomfortable as we learn how to become better at feeling.

It is essential to be prepared to confront and explore aspects of ourselves that we might prefer to ignore. This journey involves the courage to acknowledge and understand the neglected or suppressed dimensions of our personality, often referred to as the "exiled parts" that reside in the shadows of our psyche. These are the unconscious elements that, while hidden, exert influence over our actions and emotions.

The more I learn the less I “know”. At 48, I am as much of a learner and novice as i’ve ever been. I am beginning to think that this IS the point. Not gaining expertise and completion, but peeling back the layers continually. like a snake that sheds her skin and starts a new, reborn as a beginner once again. It’s as exciting as it is overwhelming. Embracing the beginners mind 🙂
