This week, GI Care for Kids stands in support of the littlest warriors living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) — children and teens who face the daily challenges of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis with incredible strength and resilience.
IBD can be overwhelming for families, but no child walks this journey alone. Our team of pediatric gastroenterologists is dedicated to providing expert, compassionate care while helping our patients live healthy, active, and empowered lives.

🌟 Meet Dr. Asiya Shakir! 🌟

We’re excited to highlight Dr. Shakir, a compassionate and accomplished pediatric gastroenterologist at GI Care for Kids. A UGA magna cm laude graduate, she earned her medical degree and completed her pediatric residency at the Medical College of Georgia before finishing a pediatric GI fellowship at the University of Oklahoma, where she received multiple research awards.

Board-certified in both Pediatric Gastroenterology and General Pediatrics, Dr. Shakir has published widely and presented her work nationally. Outside of caring for patients, she enjoys writing, advocacy, community service, and raising her two children.

We are honored to have Dr. Shakir as a member of our team 💙

Dr. Patel, an Atlanta native and experienced pediatric gastroenterologist, is a valued member of our team! A UGA honors graduate with advanced training at Westchester Medical Center and New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell, he brings years of clinical leadership experience. He has been recognized as an Atlanta “Top Doctor” since 2016.
👶 Dr. Patel specializes in celiac disease, IBD, GERD, EoE, constipation, and feeding difficulties—delivering compassionate, patient-centered care.
When he’s not caring for kids, he’s cheering on Atlanta sports, exploring the outdoors, and spending time with his wife and two children.
