Stove went down (electrical- it’ll be fixed this week) so I pulled out the old faithful tried and true hot plate! I ain’t Mexican at all so I used Spanglish Asadero’s Birria and Taco Seasonings on split chicken breasts and Spanish rice. Not bad!

One month ago, I had a and as a result a subsequent reduction. I was told to “wait and see” if it turned into cancer… and if I didn’t wait, I’d have to pay out of pocket. I chose myself. I chose peace. I decided my health was worth more than waiting on insurance to decide if I deserved care.
Sharing this because we have to advocate for ourselves in these medical spaces. Especially Black women. Nobody is coming to save us but us.
I’m sharing this because I love Black women. We deserve care without hesitation. We deserve to be listened to the first time. Too many of us get brushed off, told to wait, or treated like we’re overreacting. Advocate for yourself in every medical room you walk into. Ask the questions. Push back. to choose and advocate for yourself every single time.

As a licensed midwife and critical care paramedicc, I feel like capitalism has integrated and commodified the birth space, making birth as an act and as a certification more about the bread than it is about its core purpose- saving lives. A way to discredit and decertify people who’ve been delivering babies for decades as a midwife without formal PWI education.
As a degreed and lovenaed midwife- I am no more of a midwife than Mama Sarahn. SHE is more than me. I am HER legacy. She taught and opened doors for ME. I sit at her feet with a pen and notepad. No frills, no thrills – JUST standing on birth business 10 toes down in black Air Force 1s with a crease in the toes.
The only reason I hold these degrees is so when I walk in the room, you respect me too because I have the paperwork and not only do I deserve a seat at the table, I’m qualified to have my own table and invite others. SHE is the elder and expertise in this area. She is the great tree in the room. And yall do too- that’s why you have commodified it- making it more about money and pushing Black Women out of this space than it is about actual creditialing.
I don’t like that.
I can hold the door open for people like Mama Sarahn who not only opened the door she also left open a window, told me where the key was and how to pick the locs.
My midwifery knowledge and skills pales in comparison to Mama Sarahn Henderson and she deserves ALL THINGS GOOD and more for being an example in midwifery, as a Black woman in the community and for being herself as she communicates through the people through dance and drum... Ase.
