There are areas of the world that are labeled as “blue zones” where people have higher life expectancies compared to the rest of the world. There isn’t a magic pill or hidden secret as to why people who live in blue zones live longer than others. Research shows that they live longer because they prioritize the basics: balanced meals, daily activity, adequate sleep, managing stress, and human connection.
If you are struggling with feeling overwhelmed, confused, or stressed about managing your health, here’s my advice for the day: focus on the basics.

Vitamin D deficient? Most of us are. About 40% of Americans to be exact.

Vitamin D is particularly important for bone health but plays a role in many other bodily functions.
This nutrient is mainly absorbed through sunlight, which varies greatly based on what season it is, time of day, and how much time you spend in doors.

Even though many of us are struggling with this summer heat, try to get 20 minutes of sunlight between 10 am to 4 pm to maximize your vitamin D absorption.

The gut microbiotia consists of living organisms. These organisms outnumber human cells and have a major influence on all aspects of our life, including brain function. The organisms are able to create and release hormones and neurotransmitters through the gut-brian-axis to influence our mood, cognitive function, overall brain health.

Probiotics are also living organisms found in food that have beneficial effects when consumed in adequate amounts. L.Plantarum is a type of probiotic in fermented foods, such as brined olives, kimchi, pickles, tofu, and sauerkraut.

In a 12 week study with 79 adults that consumed 20 billion CFU (colony forming units) each day of L.Plantarum or a placebo, those who consumed the probiotic were found with:
- Reduced inflammation linked to depression
- Reduced plasma cortisol, a major stress hormone
- Increased neuroactive metabolites (substance by-products) associated with cognitive function

Overall, probiotics were found to improve stress-related symptoms such as anxiety and depression by modifying the gut microbiotia in a positive way.
