Great story on Angela Juric’s journey after her father was hit by a front-loader on the job, crushing his pelvis, and how she discovered the Kids' Chance of Georgia initiative. Georgia Tech Professional Education

When Angela Juric’s father was hit by a frontloader on the job, crushing his pelvis, her family’s future shifted instantly. Stepping in as a translator for her parents at the age of 11, Angela had to mature quickly after her father’s accident.

Approaching the end of high school, Angela discovered the Kids' Chance of Georgia, Inc. scholarship, which has supported her journey at Georgia Tech — where she’s now a biology major with a Spanish minor — and her dream of becoming the healthcare professional her family needed years ago.

We’ve seen a recent effort towards more specifically designed PPE to better fit and protect female bodies (as most PPE is designed for the male frame), and this new crash test dummy takes prevention a big step forward. It’s so important to understand unconscious bias and old expectations and this new testing will save lives.

Women are less likely to get into car crashes than men, yet they are 17% more likely to die in one. They are also 73% more likely to be seriously injured in a head-on collision. One major reason is that car safety has been designed around one body type: the average man.

For decades, crash test dummies shaped vehicle safety standards, but the “female” dummy used today is essentially a smaller male model. It is usually placed in the passenger seat, rarely in the driver’s seat, and it does not reflect the real anatomy of women. This has left a safety gap that puts women at higher risk.

Now, progress is underway. The U.S. Department of Transportation has introduced the first advanced female crash test dummy built to represent true physical differences between men and women, including the neck, pelvis, collarbone, and legs. It has more than 150 sensors to measure how women’s bodies experience impact.

The DOT is evaluating this new dummy for use in the government’s five-star ratings, a shift advocates say could finally improve safety outcomes for women.

Over 10,000 women die in car crashes each year because safety tests and equipment are primarily designed to protect male bodies. It’s time to make vehicles safe for EVERYONE.

Watt's up folks? What do electricians call a power outage? A current event!
We still have room in our upcoming OSHA 3095 Electrical Standards course in Savannah next week - August 12-15. There's a field trip and some of the most "electrifying" (and knowledgeable) instructors around to help you make sense of this "current" subject. We only offer this class a couple times a year, so if you are working on completing your Facilities Maintenance Safety Certificate with Georgia Tech, now's the time! Our own Jenny Houlroyd reflects on “Everything Is Tuberculosis”

Everything is tuberculosis — and silica, and workplace hazards, and exposures.

Jenny Houlroyd, environmental health and safety expert and Georgia Tech instructor, recently reflected on “Everything Is Tuberculosis” by John Green and its surprising relevance to the occupational safety and health field.

In “Everything is Tuberculosis,” Green notes that while a cure for tuberculosis was discovered in the 1950s, over 150 million people have died from it since — largely due to stigma, misinformation, and systemic inaction. Houlroyd highlights the parallel between preventable tuberculosis deaths and the “othering” of people exposed to hazards in the workplace.

One of Houlroyd’s key takeaways is that people are both the cause and the cure in relation to the social determinants of health, and in workplaces the same is true. Workplaces have the potential to cause exposure or prevent exposure and protect workers through diligent safety and health programs.

When Cecilia Hernandez graduated from Rollins College earlier this month, she and her fellow students weren't the only ones who were honored onstage.

Hernandez's service dog Canela, who has been at her side for the past three and a half years, was also recognized with a special patch at the May 11 commencement ceremony.

"Having a service dog in chemistry is nearly unheard of," Hernandez wrote on Instagram. "It required many, many training sessions just to get her used to wearing PPE. As I did research for an undergraduate thesis, this required even longer days in the lab."
