S.F. museum’s cake picnic satisfies craving with nearly 1,400 concoctions!!!!
They came from San Francisco; they came from Oakland; they came from New York and Seattle. And each and every one of them brought a cake.

A total of 613 cakes, to be exact.

At Cake Picnic, there was but one cardinal rule: "No cake, no entry."

Like a fever dream of cake goodness, hundreds of bakers converged at San Francisco's Legion of Honor museum.

On a sunny, crisp and glorious fall day in the far northwest corner of San Francisco, Sunga was surrounded by proud bakers, happy onlookers and many, many cakes.

There is only one requirement: That you bring a whole cake. You can buy it at the store or make it yourself. But you have to bring a cake.

The scene was like something out of a children's book: Dozens of long tables adorned with cake upon cake upon delicious, majestic, enticing cake. Layer cakes, bundt cakes, square cakes, 4-foot-long cakes, birthday cakes, tiered cakes, tortes, wedding cakes, slumping cakes and cupcakes. It was a cake potluck Or a cake heaven, cake nirvana, cake buffet. Call it whatever you want to call it – I call it a cake picnic,"

Cowboy Butter- a type of compound (REAL) butter made by combining softened butter with a mix of herbs, spices, and seasonings, including garlic, lemon zest and juice, Dijon mustard, paprika, and cayenne pepper. It is a tasty, savory butter infused with fresh herbs and it just so happens to be making waves in kitchens across the country. Think of it as the close cousin of regular butter, with a bold and adventurous flavor profile.

If you don't make your own, I suggest Président butter, a slightly salted spreadable churned to perfection butter from a blend of French cream and salt to give it a distinctive deep rich flavor and smooth texture. This butter can be used as a spread or a dip. It pairs well with all kinds of meat, from chicken to steak to pork.

~Ingredients~
▢½ cup unsalted butter
▢1 tablespoon coarse Dijon Mustard
▢1 tablespoon fresh chives
▢1 tablespoon fresh parsley
▢2 teaspoons fresh thyme
▢2 teaspoons garlic
▢1 teaspoon lemon juice
▢½ teaspoon paprika
▢¼ teaspoon kosher salt
▢⅛ teaspoon pepper
▢⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper
▢⅛ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

Mix well, roll is wax paper and refrigerate for up to 5 days or freeze

Slow-cooked short ribs add depth and richness to the sweet, caramelized onions, while a layer of melted Gruyère cheese on top of toasted bread brings a savory crunch. Perfect for cozy evenings, this hearty soup combines the comforting flavors of beef, cheese, and onions, making it an unforgettable dish that’s sure to impress.

Ingredients: For the Soup:

2 lbs short ribs (bone-in)
4 large onions, thinly sliced
4 cups beef broth
2 cups red wine (preferably dry)
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp butter
1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves (or 1 tsp dried thyme)
1 bay leaf
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
1 tbsp flour (optional, for thickening)

4 slices of French baguette or rustic bread

Lemon Basil Salmon Rolls 🍋🐟

Elegant and light, these salmon rolls are stuffed with creamy ricotta, Parmesan, and fresh basil atop tender asparagus, and finished with a bright lemon sauce.

Ingredients:
For the Salmon Rolls:
4 salmon fillets (about 5 oz each), skin removed
A pinch of salt and freshly cracked black pepper
1½ cups ricotta cheese, smooth and creamy
½ cup finely grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons fresh basil, finely chopped
2 teaspoons finely grated lemon zest
½ pound fresh asparagus spears, ends trimmed

For the Lemon Sauce:
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
½ cup chicken broth (or vegetable broth for a lighter option)
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 teaspoons cornstarch mixed with 2 teaspoons water (slurry)
Instructions
Step 1: Assemble the Salmon Rolls
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Lightly grease a baking sheet to prevent sticking.
Lay the salmon fillets on a clean surface and season both sides with a pinch of salt and pepper.
In a small bowl, mix ricotta, parmesan, basil, lemon zest, and a small pinch of salt and pepper until smooth.

Spread a layer of the ricotta mixture evenly over each salmon fillet.

Lay 2–3 asparagus spears across the center of each fillet.
Roll the salmon tightly around the asparagus, placing the rolls seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet.

Step 2: Bake the Salmon Rolls
Bake the salmon rolls in the preheated oven for 15–20 minutes, or until the salmon is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.

Step 3: Make the Lemon Sauce
While the salmon bakes, melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat.

Stir in the chicken broth and fresh lemon juice, allowing the mixture to warm through.
Add the cornstarch slurry, stirring continuously until the sauce thickens, about 3–5 minutes.

Step 4: Serve and Garnish
Remove the salmon rolls from the oven and arrange them on a serving platter.

Drizzle the warm lemon sauce generously over each roll.

Garnish with fresh basil leaves or an extra sprinkle of lemon zest for a vibrant finish and enjoy!

I know the cost of eggs is an issue right now, but ONE whole pound of Crab does something to my soul. And BTW, no matter how you make your Foo Young, if you don't get the gravy right, you've only wasted 4 or 5 eggs and a pound of lump Crab meat.

I am an Egg Foo Young and a seafood person, and if you are the same, then this should stir your soul as well.

Homemade coffee creamer

Ingredients:

14 ounces of sweetened condensed milk

2 cups of milk

1/3 cup flavored optional syrup

Vanilla extract

Directions:

Mix it all up – ENJOY!

Here are other flavor combos:

French vanilla – 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Almond Chocolate – Cocoa Powder and Almond Extract

Strudel cake – 1 tbsp cinnamon, vanilla and almond extract

Cinnamon Cake – 2 tsp cinnamon, 2 tsp vanilla extract

Almond Joy – 1 tsp coconut extract, 1 tsp almond extract, 2 tbsp chocolate syrup

Caramel – Just add caramel lol

Honey Vanilla – 1/4 cup honey, 1 tsp vanilla (yeah…it’s simple)

German Strudel – Equal parts cinnamon, vanilla, and almond

1-2-3 Just Like That Cake.

You need two boxes of cake mix. One can be any flavor you prefer, but one MUST be Angel Food cake mix.

Mix them together or shake them together.

Store the mixture in an airtight container until you get the urge for dessert.

Then just put three Tbsp. of the dry mixture in a big coffee mug and stir in 2 Tbsp of water.

Microwave it for one minute and you will have a single serving of cake!

Top with ice cream, whipped cream or fruit compote.
