Sabia The Black Doula

Sabia The Black Doula I am a Radical Doula, Educator, Coach, Reproductive Justice Advocate & the founder of For The Village

My name is Sabia Wade and I am a Full Spectrum Doula, as well as a Reiki II Practitioner. I am currently living in San Diego, CA and I am open to assisting births in San Diego County. I am also open to assisting with births outside of San Diego County, if my travel expenses are accommodated. I am currently training under Birth Arts International and my experience began with The Prison Birth Project, located in Massachusetts, where I served incarcerated parents and parents on drug maintenance medications. From there, I have been able to work with many different parents, including military and teen parents. I believe in empowering birthing parents in their birth of choice but also preparing them and supporting them for the known and unknown. I love working with all families, regardless of race, economic status, gender, sexuality or culture.

I’ve always carried some imposter syndrome in this work—committed to reproductive justice, building businesses without formal education, and learning in real time.

But stepping into this new role as Strategic Advisor with reminds me that lived experience, community wisdom, and vision are just as valuable as credentials.

My path hasn’t been traditional—and that’s the point. Reimagining how capital flows, how we build businesses, and how we center care requires voices that have walked outside the ā€œtraditionalā€ lanes.

This role feels deeply meaningful because it’s proof that our lived knowledge is enough. šŸ’›

Got the deed back today. Officially the owner of another slice of my great great grandparents land. Next up, building my momma’s home! It’s been a rough two months with the loss of my great grandma aka NANA but this feels like a gift from her and my family. I’m so grateful šŸ’›

These last two months have been quite the doozy! Death, grief, depression, hope, love, joy all circling in my body some times one at a time and sometimes all at once. Sometimes I’m able to get a bunch done, other times I’m dissociating to heavily to do much or I’m experiencing a deep autistic shut down from everything feeling like way too much. There’s good days like today though! I worked out, I ate, I hydrated, I talked to my mom and my friends, I did some work and came home with a Squishmallow farm. Building memories in this new home while having a partner who is willing to do the work AND understand the specifics of my brain under so much stress and sadness is a gift šŸ’›

I recently spoke with the National Doula Certification Board to discuss their objectives and offer constructive feedback. While I’m not sharing the full details of our conversation at this time, I’ve requested to continue the dialogue in collaboration with diverse leaders in the birth work community. I’ll share updates as they become available.

Even after Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW), our message remains urgent:

The movement doesn't end with BMHW25, it grows stronger. We are the original birth workers; rooted in culture, tradition, and community.

Doulas are not a product. We're not here to be bought, branded, or boxed into a system that was never made for us.

šŸ’„ We say no to top-down regulation.
šŸ’„ We say no to forced certification that strips away autonomy.
šŸ’„ We demand birthwork stay in the hands of the people.

Community based doula orgs have trained, certified, and supported thousands without gatekeeping. Don't try to erase the work of Black, Indigenous, and people of color who built this movement.

This isn't just about doulas. It's about life and death. Maternal mortality rates are rising and Black, Brown, Indigenous, and LGBTQ+ birthing people are most at risk.

Join us as we continue this critical advocacy beyond BMHW25.

It’s been 3 weeks since my great grandmother passed and 1 week since we buried her in her favorite color, blue. šŸ¦‹

Grief is weird and messy.

I’ve had bronchitis for 3 weeks. Annoying.

We rushed into putting the house together for much needed family time and a housewarming of sorts. Weird but good? Idk.

I haven’t worked in 3 weeks and I’ve cancelled and shifted work engagements. Necessary.

Either way, I’m grateful for everyone sending me messages of support and calling to check in. My team has been protecting my time and keeping me out of work. I couldn’t ask for more.

There’s many unread texts and unanswered calls I’m taking my time and I’ll get back to everyone in due time.

I’m just moving at the pace of my griefā€¦šŸ’›
