What Is Involved in Skin Allergy Testing?
Skin allergy testing involves procedures to identify specific allergens that trigger allergic reactions in an individual. The most common method is the skin prick test, where tiny amounts of potential allergens are introduced into the skin, usually on the forearm or back. A small needle or lancet is used to prick the skin, allowing the allergens to pe*****te the surface. If you are allergic to a substance, a localized reaction, such as redness or swelling, will occur at the test site within 15-20 minutes.
Another method is the intradermal test, where a small amount of allergen is injected just below the skin surface. This test is more sensitive and is often used when the skin prick test results are inconclusive. Patch testing is used to identify allergens causing contact dermatitis; patches containing allergens are applied to the skin and left in place for 48 hours, after which reactions are assessed. These tests help pinpoint specific allergens, enabling the development of effective treatment and management plans.
