You know what time it is! Let’s get to know Kari Byron, the next nerd to join KDHRC’s Nerd of the Month Club, inspired by National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’s Jelly of the Month Club!
Kari Byron is an actor, producer, and author best known for hosting the hit Discovery Channel Series, MythBusters. She is also a founder of EXPLR media, a streaming service that connects young people to real skills, real mentors, and real career pathways. EXPLR also hosts the National STEM Festival, with Byron as the director. The festival highlights teenage innovators and connects them with mentors and brand partners in the industry, and opens clear pathways to in-demand careers.

She has also written a memoir— “Crash Test Girl” — that reflects on her journey while applying the scientific method to navigating life’s challenges. Happy Earth Day from the nerds of KDHRC! 🌎 Each year, Earth Day grows more and more important as technological advances threaten her future. This is the only home we have, and it’s up to us to save it! Let’s talk about the things we can do in our daily lives to make a difference:
♻️Recycling is more than just giving materials another purpose. Recycling saves energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, diverts waste from landfills, and that’s not even the half of it.
🌱Gardening & farming improves air and soil quality, supports biodiversity, reduces carbon footprints, and conserves water.
🗑️ Whether it’s an organized event or something you do on a free Saturday, trash pick ups help to protect wildlife and prevents toxic chemicals from non-biodegradable materials from leaching into soil and water. Make sure you stay safe if you engage in litter pick up efforts.
👕 Fast fashion may be accessible, but it is extremely detrimental to our environment through massive waste generation, intense water comsuption, and high carbon emissions. Not to mention fast fashion clothes are not made to withstand the test of time, and end up in landfills quickly. Shop second-hand to give great pieces a second life!
🚲 Walking, biking, or car pooling, helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lowers air pollution, and will either give you some good exercise or a great car conversation with friends!
We can make a difference if we all work together to protect this beautiful home of ours. Let us know in the comments your favorite way to stay green!

It’s time to announce the March Nerd of the Month! Welcome Bill Nye to KDHRC’s Nerd of the Month Club, inspired by the Jelly of the Month Club from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

Bill Nye (the Science Guy) is practically a household name – so many young students grew up watching his show! He is an educator, engineer, comedian, television presenter, author, and inventor who received a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University in 1977 and was recruited by Boeing as an engineer shortly after graduation. While working for Boeing in Seattle, he found a way to combine his love of science and comedy, working as an engineer by day and a stand-up comedian at night. He shortly became a comedy writer for a Seattle comedy show in 1986, which led to the beginning of his well-known show, “Bill Nye the Science Guy”. The show was a hit and went on to win 18 Emmy awards and a place in many living rooms and school science classrooms.

Bill Nye is more than just the “Science Guy”. He has written multiple children’s books that introduce science in a fun way for a range of ages. He has also written adult books placed on the New York Times’ Best Sellers List.

To write all of his achievements would more than exceed the limit for this caption, but it’s important to recognize that not only did Bill Nye instill a love for science in so many children around the world, his contributions to the world of STEM have been so extensive that he’s even been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freed in recognition of his dedication to science education, and most recently a Lifetime Achievement Award. Bill Nye is an example of all KDHRC’s core values, and clearly a fellow Nerd in the Know!

We are honored to welcome Bill Nye to KDHRC’s Nerd of the Month club, and we encourage you to revisit his work (and maybe take a stroll down memory lane!) What’s your favorite episode?
