When Should Patients Consider Joint Replacement Surgery?

There are multiple factors in deciding when to consider joint replacement surgery. It is important that the diagnosis be correct. Some issues that can cause joint pain overlap with osteoarthritis. For example, hip pain is sometimes caused by a pinched nerve in the low back.

It is also important for the patient to try conservative measures before proceeding with surgery. In medicine, we are always weighing the risks and benefits of treatment. If a NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) or a cortisone injection can keep you going, in general there are fewer risks to these treatments and are often preferred. Taking on the risks of surgery begin to make sense once these simpler treatments no longer work.

The third, and perhaps most important consideration, is how the pain affects you. I always ask my patients what their pain keeps them from doing. For some people it is exercise or sports such as tennis or golf. For other patients it is shopping. For many it is traveling or working in the garden. If you find yourself giving up on the things you love to do because of arthritis pain, I highly encourage you to have a conversation with a surgeon about joint replacement options.

The right time to do a surgery is when you have exhausted the other treatments and the pain from the osteoarthritis keeps you from being yourself.

Call our office for a consultation. Together we can determine if surgery is the right choice for you.

We all try to manage the aches and pains that come with arthritis. We adjust to less activity. We take more medication. We have lower expectations.

As we enter into surgery, the typical expectation is that we will have a fair amount of pain and therefore will need a fair amount of narcotics to manage the post-operative time frame.

Our program has spent considerable focus on making this journey as comprehensive and attainable as possible. As a result, we have among the lowest post-operative narcotic usage. This was achieved by integrating all facets of the surgical process into one program with the patient experience combined with the outcome in sharp focus. Through this integration, we have been able to achieve outstanding results for our patients. Our patients often use Tylenol and Ibuprofen and infrequently dip into the narcotics such as oxycodone.

Our patients are able to safely undergo joint replacement and go home on the same day. In fact, we have been rated #1 in the nation for outpatient ambulatory surgery and #1 in Georgia for most experience.* These results represent the continuous work to make this experience a positive one for our patients who have often been hurting for so long. By managing your pain, we are able to get you back to those things that you love to do.
This allows you to adjust your activity to more activity. Less medication. And higher expectations!

*Nationally recognized hospital rating organization, Dexur, ranked Northside Hospital Forsyth #1 in the Nation for lowest length of stay, #1 in Georgia for most experience, and #1 in Georgia for the lowest readmission rate. Our team of surgeons is proud to be part of the Northside Hospital Forsyth Orthopedic Medical Staff.
