Alex's Story: From Florida to Recovery,
done with love from a true friend!
Hi, my name is Sean and I am 27 years old and have one year sober. I joined the Insight Program 1 year ago with the help of my cousin, TC Rollins, a current Insight counselor. TC got me through the front door. Before finding this awesome place that saved my life, I was consistently getting high for over 10 years.
When I started getting high, or tried a new drug for the first time, my friend Alex was usually there to introduce me to it. At first it seemed like we had found the secret to happiness, unfortunately, at some point there was a crash to that happiness. A few short years later, we were both just trying to survive.
I informed Alex of the Insight Recovery Program last July and I also told him about the Mustard Tree Foundation that was saving lives by giving financial support. I told him that maybe the foundation could help him. Alex was so powerless and very lost in his addiction, he refused despite many past over doses and arrests. At that point in time, there was nothing I could do other than give my concerns about Alex over to God. I prayed that he would survive long enough, then hopefully he would make the choice to get sober.
After a few months went by of expecting a phone call from back home that Alex had overdosed and died, he finally called me asking for help. He said he was about to get his tax return money back. To most people this is a good thing, to Alex, he was terrified he was going to end up dead, after spending it all on drugs. As quick as I could, I got in the car and drove to Florida to pick Alex up and bring him to Insight. I was hoping to save him from harm. The morning I got there I was so terrified that I would be too late. I imagined that I would walk into his room and find him overdosed after trying to get high one last time before getting sober. Thankfully, that was not the case.
When we got back to Atlanta, Alex fit right in with the group. He met Sue Hansen from the Mustard Tree Foundation early that week and told his story to her. After that we all waited to see if he would get a scholarship so he could begin treatment. My prayers were answered, he was granted a scholarship within a few hours of his request. Alex was able to get the support of so many, the counselors, the foundation, the group, and his friends. Today, Alex is alive and over one month sober. Everyday I see a better version of Alex. Someone that is happy, sober, and learning how to live again. Alex has been a life- long friend and I want to live a long life with Alex as friends, I am so grateful.
