When most people think of hip pain, they don’t typically picture it in the young, athletic population. But hip impingement and labral tears are issues we usually see in patients under the age of 40. Some of the classic symptoms include groin pain with activity, pain with prolonged sitting, and a clicking or catching sensation with certain movements. Getting a good physical exam can often tell us a lot about the patient’s condition, but an MRI arthrogram is ultimately used to confirm the diagnosis. We see and treat these injuries on a daily basis... Feel free to reach out to us if your hip pain is keeping you from doing the things you love! @ Christopher Potts, MD

34 year old basketball player suffered a complete rupture of his patellar tendon following a harsh landing from a jump. On x-ray, a complete rupture is usually easily identified due to patella alta, or a high-riding patella. This is seen in the pre-op x-ray above (left), and corrected post-operatively (right). When complete tears are repaired quickly, it prevents the tendon from shortening and scarring.

The goal of the surgery is to reattach the torn tendon to the patella and restore normal function. Strong sutures are tied to the tendon and then threaded through drill holes in the patella. These sutures are then tied in place to pull the torn edge of the tendon back to its normal position on the kneecap.

14 year old quarterback presented to our clinic with right shoulder pain 3 weeks after his initial injury. X-rays revealed a proximal humerus physeal fracture. At the time of surgery we attempted a closed reduction, but because his shoulder had a few weeks to heal, there was zero movement of the fracture. At this point, we proceeded with a mini open delto-pectoral approach to reduce the shoulder and held the fracture in place with two lateral pins. These pins will be removed 4-6 weeks post-op

An osteochondral allograft transplantation (OATS) is an operation in which a damaged area of a joint is removed and replaced with healthy bone and cartilage from a donor graft. This can be a successful treatment option for young and active patients with symptomatic cartilage injuries in their knee.

Once the lesion is exposed, a hole is made in the area of the defect. The osteochondral plug is then harvested from the donor graft to match the exact size of the lesion. The plug is then press fit into the hole, filling the site of the defect.

Over time, a successful OATS surgery will enable the bone and cartilage to grow into the damaged area of the knee - relieving symptoms, delaying early joint replacement, and allowing the patient to return to the activities they love most.

Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair 💪🏼

Your rotator cuff is a group of four muscles that stabilize your shoulder and allow you to lift and rotate your arm. Rotator cuff tears are a common injury that typically happen over time from normal wear and tear, but can also happen suddenly with traumatic injuries. In an arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, we are able to reattach the torn tendon back down to the bone through a few small incisions. After we finish the repair, we inject stem cells into the joint to facilitate healing post-operatively.
