National Candy Corn Day

In the late 1800’s, George Renniger of the Wunderle Candy Company created this colorful confection to celebrate the beauty of corn, and the beautiful colors that autumn brings along with it. In preparation for winter as a long and cold affair, with electricity not quite having come into common usage, the candy was created as a bright spot. The bright colors of these candies could last throughout, bringing both a visceral joy and a burst of much-needed sugar during the darker time of the year when days are short and nights are long.

Candy Corn was notable partially due to the fact that it was the world’s first tri-color candy! It didn’t hurt that the related companies realized that specialized candy for Halloween was becoming increasingly popular in this era. So more and more styles of Halloween candies became popular during this time of the year. Next on the list to be created by Wunderle were the Candy Pumpkins made from Mellocreme–a very close cousin to Candy Corn that is often sold in the same bag, called Autumn Mix.

And though a little bit will go a long way when it comes to sugar consumption, candy corn is actually fat free. National Candy Corn Day is the celebration of this delicious treat, and everything to follow it in years to come.

Smart is Cool Day

If there’s ever a time to show off those incredible IQ test results, Smart is Cool Day is probably it. Though it’s not clear where the tradition started, the eggheaded individual’s idea was absolutely brilliant.

In celebration of Smart is Cool Day, many schools will put together shows for their pupils and students and invite both street-smart youngsters and successful degree holders to speak to them about the importance of staying in school.

But perhaps there’s really no need for that, because all it takes to see smart people are cool is to spend some time doing some online searches about cool smart people such as Mayim Bialik, Zach Braff or Matthew McConaughey and to check out their background.

Smart is Cool Day offers a wide range of opportunities to reevaluate what is “cool” in today’s world and remember that it is completely possible to be both smart and cool at the same time!

For those who are wondering how smart they really are, it might be time to test your wits with an IQ test that can be found online. A quick search offers a variety of tests that show the intelligence quotients, such as the one at IQTest.com.

However, it is important to remember that there are all kinds of different ways to measure being “smart”, and an IQ test measures factors like problem solving abilities and reasoning. But other types of intelligence, such as social abilities or emotional intelligence, can be just as important for getting along in the world. So for those who may not be “smart” on an IQ test shouldn’t let that get them down!

But those who do score high – like really, really high, up in the top 2% of the population – can download the Mensa app and enroll to become a Mensa member!

Conflict Resolution Day

Conflict Resolution Day is a global event, intended to promote the concept of peaceful conflict resolution. Established in 2005 by the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR), it is now an annual celebration.

Primarily an educational event, the main purpose of Conflict Resolution Day is to increase awareness of the various peaceful, non-violent methods of conflict resolution available, such as mediation and arbitration. In addition, the ACR hopes to promote their use in various different avenues of life, including in schools, workplaces, within the legal system and even amongst families.

One way Conflict Resolution Day is used is to celebrate the significant contributions of peaceful conflict resolvers, whether on a local, national or international level. Folks such as Mahatma Gandhi, Marie Curie, Horace Mann, Dolores Huerta and so many others should be celebrated for the helpful models they have been as they lived their lives in an effort toward resolving conflict in a peaceful manner.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Honoring Native American people throughout the United States, Indigenous Peoples’ Day was first officially celebrated in the US in 2021, when US President Joe Biden became the first president to formally recognize the day. However, the idea for the day goes back much further.

In 1977, the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland sponsored the International Conference on Discrimination Against Indigenous Populations in the Americas. Part of the purpose was to begin celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day, particularly with the idea of replacing the adoration and glorification of Christopher Columbus with recognition and acknowledgement of the native peoples of the land.

Columbus Day, which is an American holiday, falls on the second Monday of October in the United States, has been less revered in recent years. This is likely due to the fact that the indigenous peoples of the time had their lands and lives taken away from them by the settlers from Europe, and the American people are becoming more aware of the way history has been written only from the perspective of the white person.

In exchange for Columbus Day, many people in the United States have begun the celebration of Indigenous Peoples Day instead. Coinciding with the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus on American soil, a celebration of Indigenous Peoples’ Day was organized on October 12, 1992 in Berkeley, California. Many other cities and towns have accepted and implemented something similar in their communities, including places such as Los Angeles, California and Washington, DC.

At least twelve of the United States do not celebrate Columbus Day, and the state of South Dakota celebrates Native American Day instead. Tribal governments in Oklahoma have also made declarations regarding the celebration of Native American Day.

World Sight Day is a special annual day that is celebrated around the world each year in order to focus on raising awareness for blindness and vision impairment. The day was first established by the Lions Club Foundation and it was first celebrated in 1984. A few years later, the effort was collaborated by the World Health Organization (WHO) along with the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB).

The IAPB is an organization that is a global alliance in which a variety of charitable organizations and NGOs from more than 100 countries work together to create a world where every person has access to the eye care they need.

A large number of organizations around the world have been involved with World Sight Day for many years. Awareness for the issue of blindness, including prevention and finding a cure, is spread through a large number of different events in celebration of the day.

Some people choose to show their support for World Sight Day by planting trees, while other people get involved by submitting a photograph online that will be used to create an international photograph montage focusing on the theme of blindness.

Vision and sight are vital to the everyday lives of human beings, from allowing people to navigate their way around and do their work to creating intimacy when eye contact is made with another person. Vision works toward keeping people safe, connecting them with their surroundings and even helping to maintain sharp minds.

Sadly, many people around the world lose their sight, often for preventable reasons, simply because they don’t have access to appropriate eye health care. World Sight Day seeks to help people understand the importance of keeping their vision protected, whether in the workplace or at home. In addition, the day is meant to bring vision care providers together in the common cause of encouraging people and equipping people to love their eyes!

International Podiatry Day

The International Federation of Podiatrists is behind International Podiatry Day. The federation has existed since 1947 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing podiatry worldwide. It has 26 member countries sharing research, practice and knowledge between them.

International Podiatry Day replaced another event that used to be held earlier in the year. The event is now a modern celebration that uses social media campaigns to raise awareness. The aim of the International Federation of Podiatrists is to make it the biggest event with a focus on worldwide foot health.

Key leaders in podiatry support this event every year and talk about why podiatry and foot health are important to them. More up-to-date ways of recognizing the event have included informative videos and social media hashtags. You can start to see people celebrating months before the day arrives.
