A new report from Emory University shows that certain mental health conditions escalate the risk of developing heart disease by 50-100% — and adverse outcomes from existing heart conditions by 60-170%.

Emory University professor Viola Vaccarino, MD, PhD, led this metareview linking mental health conditions to CVD, along with co-authors Amit Shah, MD, and Douglas Bremner, MD, also Emory professors.

Adam and Rommi Kashlan are 22 and entering their second year at Emory University School of Medicine. For the brothers, pursuing medicine together feels like a natural step. Alongside their brother Zane, Adam and Rommi graduated as co-valedictorians from West Forsyth High School before enrolling at Georgia Tech. By 18, all three had graduated and begun research opportunities. Now, Adam and Rommi have reunited at Emory to continue their journey in medicine.

“Having your brother in the same class makes a huge difference,” Adam says. “When things get hard, and they do, it helps to have someone right there who knows exactly what you’re going through.”

Passionate about innovation, Adam is working on a startup that aims to improve the detection of skin cancers in patients with darker skin tones, an area often overlooked in training and diagnosis. Rommi, meanwhile, gives back to his community by participating in volunteer efforts such as the medical school's student-run Good Samaritan Clinic.

“We’re in the trenches together,” Rommi says. “Highest highs, lowest lows. That’s what it means to have your brother by your side.”
