This says it all. It’s the truth, and there is a lot you can do that is free.
To reduce health risks, health guidelines generally recommend:
• At least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, or
• 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity, plus
• Muscle-strengthening activities twice a week
Even small increases in daily movement (e.g., walking, stretching, using stairs, walking around when you’re on the phone, etc.) can have a positive impact.

If you need suggestions on how to become more active, let us know! We can help!

Surgery is not a quick fix…Oddly, we must address this concept, but many think they’ll be back to 100% faster, or that it is the only option. This is rarely the case. Look at the average recovery time for common procedures like ACL repair, RTC repair, etc. For some, surgery is the best option. For many, it isn’t, especially for athletes.

Try conservative management, like physical therapy, first!

Dear ALL consumers of “health care” especially those with an insurance plan, pay attention to this. When we hear our patients say “I don’t deal with insurance” or “I don’t get insurance” we highly recommend you learn. It’s not 100% your “provider’s” responsibility to know how you’re choosing to pay for your care. All your plan does is process your claims OR even better, use authorizations and limitations to gatekeep. You’re still paying your deductible, co-pay, out-of-pocket, premiums, etc.

Stay tuned for part two for tips to navigate your insurance plan BEFORE you seek non-emergency treatment.

Hot topic: Working out if you’re sick. Should you do it?

You all who follow us will not be shocked when we say this, but exercise is good for your immune system. Moderate-intensity exercise is shown to boost your immunity. Conversely, too much vigorous exercise can depress adaptive immunity, yet short bursts of intense activity show no change to immunity. For example, light jogging/walking with some running “bursts” would be just fine for not only cardio/endurance but also your immune system. Exercise can prevent illness!

But we all get sick. So, do you exercise when you're sick?

Bottom line: let symptoms be your guide. If you have a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, muscle/joint pain, or exhaustion, do not exercise. Avoid HIIT, heavy lifting, workout classes/team sports.
If you’re feeling better but have a runny nose/congestion but no fever, (or any of the above) go for some light activity. Walking, light yoga, etc.; keep the pulse to 150 or less. Progress as you begin to feel better.

It goes without saying: WASH YOUR HANDS!
*If you did see your MD because of illness, check with them if you need guidance on your specific condition. *
