Ernestine Eckstein was an LGBTQ+ activist, vice president of the Daughters of Bilitis (a le***an organization) for the New York chapter, and was the only person of color at the first annual Reminder Day protests in 1965. Eckstein attended the protests and performed some of her activism under a pseudonym, knowing that if word got out that she was a gay woman she could lose everything. Eckstein was the first Black person to appear on the cover of The Ladder, a magazine for members of the Daughters of Bilitis. https://makinggayhistory.com/podcast/ernestine-eckstein/ has some links to video and audio of Eckstein you should check out.

We've all heard the story of the Stonewall Riots. It was not started by Marsha P Johnson and a shotglass, or bottle, or brick. It is likely, however, that Stormé DeLarverie may have thrown the first punch. Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to a Black mother and White father, DeLarverie was a le***an, a drag king, and an emcee in New York. When police raided the Stonewall Inn on the night of June 28, 1969, they went after DeLarverie to arrest her. She fought back, threw fists. Even while in handcuffs she fought against the police and tried to escape repeatedly, shouting at the crowd "Why don't you guys do something?" Only after she was lifted bodily and shoved into the back of a police wagon did the crowd erupt into a riot. DeLarverie died in 2014 at the age of 93.

Bayard Rustin was a civil rights activist who helped organize several protests and marches throughout the twenty-first century. Rustin also went to California during WWII to help protect the properties of Japanese-Americans who were imprisoned at the command of President Roosevelt. Rustin was openly gay, a big deal at the time which kept him mostly in advisor roles, a sort of "man behind the curtain." This didn't stop him from working with key figures in civil rights activism, such as the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr, and organizing the March on Washington in 1963.
