In DBT, understanding emotions begins with being able to identify and name them. It’s not always easy—sometimes what looks like anger is really hurt, or what feels like anxiety is actually fear. And a lot of the time, we just say “I’m fine” without really checking in with ourselves.

In DBT, learning to identify and name emotions is a key part of building awareness. It helps us make sense of what we’re feeling so we can respond more clearly, instead of reacting automatically. Learn more about DBT at Hside.org 💙

In DBT, dialectics is the practice of holding two truths at the same time, even when they seem to contradict. It’s about shifting from “either/or” thinking to “both/and” thinking.

For example, you can be doing your best and still need to make changes. Someone can be angry with you and still care about you. A situation can feel overwhelming and still be worth facing.

Dialectical thinking helps us move away from rigid, black-and-white thinking and toward a more flexible, balanced way of seeing the world. In DBT, we don’t choose between acceptance and change—we work with both at the same time. Learn more about DBT at Hside.org

Earlier this month, we welcomed Junior League of Atlanta volunteers and our partner organization, MAAC, to help us create 2026 vision boards! Hillside clients collaged their 2026 goals, along with creating DBT Skill boards to share with their cottages. Thank you to our volunteers for helping us start the new year off right 💙

Want to ask for what you need without losing your cool—or the relationship? In DBT, we use a skill called DEAR MAN to help with assertive communication. It’s a step-by-step strategy for making requests or setting boundaries while staying calm, clear, and confident.

DEAR MAN helps you express yourself effectively, increase the chances of being heard, and keep your self-respect intact. Whether you're asking a friend for space, telling a teacher you need help, or setting limits with a loved one, this skill gives you a plan.

It’s not about controlling the outcome—it’s about showing up with clarity and confidence. Learn more about DBT at Hside.org 💙

Strong emotions aren’t the problem. It’s how we respond to them that can cause trouble.
In DBT, we teach that you can’t always stop an emotion from showing up, but you can learn how to understand it, reduce its intensity, and choose how to respond.

Skills like opposite action, checking the facts, and mindfulness help create space between the feeling and the reaction. That space is where change happens. The goal isn’t to shut emotions down—it’s to build awareness and flexibility, so emotions don’t take over. Learn more about DBT at Hside.org 💙

In DBT, mindfulness means paying attention to the present moment without judging it. It helps teens notice what they’re thinking and feeling so they can respond calmly instead of reacting impulsively.

At Hillside, we use mindfulness to build self-awareness, emotional control, and the ability to pause before making choices. It’s the first step in learning how to manage emotions and create meaningful change. Learn more at Hside.org💙

This past Saturday, Hillside hosted the Governor's Rally for Division 1 Kiwanis Clubs. Held in our dining hall, the rally welcomed Clubs from Metro Atlanta and celebrated the vital support Kiwanians provide to programs around the state. We are especially grateful to the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta, which has supported Hillside for over 100 years! 💙

Hillside’s DBT Day Program offers structured support for teens in Atlanta. Designed for adolescents who need more than weekly therapy but don’t require 24/7 care, our Day Program provides intensive treatment rooted in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).

It’s a powerful option for teens struggling with emotional dysregulation, self-harm, anxiety, and depression. Our goal is to help each client stabilize, build skills, and return to their home and school life stronger. Learn more at hside.org 💙

Validation doesn’t mean agreement. It means understanding. In DBT, validation is the skill of recognizing and affirming someone’s internal experience, without fixing, judging, or dismissing it. It’s how we say, “What you’re feeling makes sense,” even if we would’ve reacted differently.

When we practice validation, we help others feel seen, heard, and safe. That’s the foundation for trust, connection, and change—especially for kids and teens working through big emotions. Learn more about DBT at Hside.org💙

Welcome to Hillside Of Atlanta, GA

The Hillside Team Are Experts At Providing Residential & Outpatient Behavioral Health Support for Youth, Adolescents, and Their Families.

Welcome to Hillside, where every day is a new day and a new beginning. Since our beginning in 1888, Hillside’s mission has been to help children and families thrive by providing outstanding residential services and community mental health services. Our programs focus on the strengths of our kids and encourage the growth and improvement they need to navigate through life. Hillside provides specialized cutting edge mental health care and education to children and their families.

Hillside is unique among mental health facilities for youth in Georgia that focuses on children, adolescents and young adults ranging in age from six to 24. Our services, both residential services and day programs, resolve family issues by helping children with mental illness move more successfully through adolescence into adulthood. With a staff fully trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), we have success with children who have not responded to other treatment modalities.

We offer community-based services, residential programs and foster care services to reach children and teens where they are, at home, school and in the community. The help we offer includes individualized treatment programs that also incorporate the family to build a complete wrap-around support structure and improved family dynamics.
