Ayurvedic medicine is a system of traditional medicine native to India and a form of alternative medicine. In Sanskrit, words āyus, meaning "longevity", and veda, meaning "knowledge" or "science". The earliest literature on Indian medical practice appeared during the Vedic period in India, i.e., in the mid-second millennium BCE. The Suśruta Saṃhitā and the Charaka Saṃhitā are encyclopedias of medicine compiled from various sources from the mid-first millennium BCE to about 500 CE. Over the following centuries, ayurvedic practitioners developed a number of medicinal preparations and surgical procedures for the treatment of various ailments.

Dr Daniel Hale Williams - Since this is the day of matters of the heart, it is only fitting to honor the black doctor who performed the first ever open heart surgery. Dr Williams performed the surgery in 1893 at Chicago’s Provident Hospital. This amazing feat was performed without x-rays, antibiotics, surgical prep-work or any of the other modern tools that doctors rely on today. If you ever have a loved one that must undergo heart surgery, thank the black doctor that developed the original procedure to save lives.
