Sacred Ascension: An Afrocentric Vision of Human Needs and Divine Purpose

Building on the work of Abraham Harold Maslow, an American psychologist and a leader in humanistic psychology I have reimagined Maslow's pyramid because I believe it represents a systematic approach to helping individuals and families actualize the faith they express in the pews but may not be a persistent part of their lives unless they are experiencing hard times. Part of the treasure we gained from our West African heritage is the weaving faith through our lives like the multicolored strands woven into Kente cloth. Each level features both the traditional needs in Maslow’s theory and their Afrocentric spiritual counterparts. At the apex, instead of "self-actualization," the pyramid shows "collective actualization and ancestral connection.”
Western psychology gave us Maslow's hierarchy of needs, but our ancestors always understood that human growth is both personal AND communal, both present AND connected to those who came before. The journey upward isn't just about individual achievement—it's about recognizing the divine spark within that connects us to community, creation, and ancestors:

**Foundation: Physical Needs** - Our bodies are sacred vessels. When we nourish them, we honor the divine life force (Àṣẹ) flowing through us and connect to the earth that sustains us all.

**Safety & Security** - True safety comes not just from individual protection but from communities that practice ubuntu—"I am because we are." Our ancestors created systems of mutual support and collective care as expressions of divine wisdom.

**Belonging & Love** - We are born into a web of relationships extending beyond the visible world. The love we share reflects the divine principle of interconnectedness taught by our ancestors across the continent;

**Esteem & Purpose** - Our worth isn't defined by individual achievement but by how we embody our God-given gifts in service to community. As the Akan proverb teaches: "The branch that bears the most fruit bends lowest”;

**Collective Actualization** - Our highest purpose isn't self-fulfillment alone but contributing to the continued elevation of our people and honoring the sacrifices of our ancestors. When we rise together, we fulfill divine intention;

This integrated understanding reminds us that spiritual growth and community wellness are inseparable. The divine doesn't call us to isolated enlightenment but to collective liberation and shared flourishing.
