Tomorrow is Rare Disease Day 2026, a global moment to recognize the 300 million people living with conditions that are often invisible, overlooked, or misunderstood.
For many, the journey to a diagnosis is not a straight line - itās a "diagnostic odyssey."
On average, it takes five to seven years, multiple misdiagnoses, and a revolving door of specialists before a patient finally gets a name for what they are experiencing.
A blood draw is rarely "routine." It is often the definitive turning point. Whether itās uncovering a genetic marker, identifying a rare biomarker, or ruling out a common condition to focus on a "zebra," that sample is the key to ending years of uncertainty.
- 72% of rare diseases are genetic.
- 1 in 10 Americans is living with a rare condition.
Why We
In medical school, doctors are often told: "When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras." Itās a lesson in looking for the most common cause. But for the rare disease community, the zebra is the symbol of reality. Sometimes, it is a zebra.
We wear our stripes today to stand with the patients, families, and clinicians who refuse to stop searching for answers. Itās not about the technology or the tools - itās about the human right to a diagnosis and the equity of care that follows.
