Because over half of our chaplain team are United Methodist clergywomen, these stories of some of the first women in ordained ministry in Methodism inspire us every day.

Sally A. Crenshaw and Leontine Turpeau Current Kelly are two 20th century clergywomen who paved the way for women and Black Methodists in local and churchwide leadership. Ask The UMC is a service of United Methodist Communications.

As a teenager, Dr. Carter G. Woodson worked in the coal mines of West Virginia. Born into illiterate poverty, he became the second Black American to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard University and went on to teach at Howard University. He is considered the father of Black History Month because of his persistent dedication to preserving and teaching the history of African-American contributions to the story of America.

Martin Luther King, Jr. gave us words to live by, words about how to treat our neighbors, words about justice, equality, love, power, hope, and faith. The words of Dr. King resonate with our mission "to create communities of connection, well-being and promise." Happy Birthday, Dr. King! Thank you for your words that still guide us to create beloved community.

Wesley Woods mourns the passing of President Jimmy Carter at the age of 100. His life of service to humanity well into his nineties exemplifies our vision of "a world in which older adults are celebrated for the lives they have lived, the wisdom they share, and all they have yet to teach us." We give thanks for this man of deep faith who, in partnership with his wife Rosalynn, used his many talents, gifts, and resources to make our nation and the world a better place. In his own words, "My faith demands--this is not optional--my faith demands that I do whatever I can, wherever I am, whenever I can, for as long as I can, with whatever I have to try to make a difference." We give thanks for his distinguished and humble life and hold his family and friends in our prayers. May God's perpetual light shine upon them and give them peace.

Our Story

MISSION To create communities of connection, well-being and promise. VISION We envision a world in which older adults are celebrated for the lives they have lived, the wisdom they share and everything they have yet to teach us. WESLEY WOODS WAY These are the core values and beliefs that strengthen our communities. This is our view of the world, what we expect from ourselves and each other and how we treat our neighbors.

  • We believe aging has a fulfilling purpose in life.

  • We believe society is strong to the extent older adults are valued.

  • We believe spiritual and personal growth is life-long.
