Subclinical observations of the skin cannot always be determined and are, therefore, idiopathic. Individuals with a history of skin sensitivities should always be evaluated carefully at each visit. The message? Never take the skin at face value - our eyes cannot determine what may be manifesting through the CNS and neurodermetic conditions. Want to learn more? Experiencing winter skin woes? Dryness, itching and tightness? Time to adjust the products you use on your eyes, face, lips, hands, arms, legs, and feet. Due to increased home heating, colder temperatures, and low humidity, we experience TEWL (transepidermal water loss). Low temperatures and decreased humidity lead to alterations in skin barrier function and an increased potential for dermatitis. Inflammatory responses activate cytokines and cortisol, prompting an influx of mast cell responses. In turn, the skin becomes more reactive to allergens and irritants. Inefficient barrier protection increases TEWL, and alterations in the skin microbiome increase skin barrier health instability. Naturophoria focuses on skin barrier health and offers head-to-toe skin support and solutions for winter skin concerns. The Skin & the Microbiome : A physiological understanding of the skin microbiome is necessary to gain insight into microbial involvement into skin disorders - as the colonization of the microbiome is influenced by the skin’s surface ecology. Since the microbiome is a major contributor to normal cutaneous immune system function, it is subject to imbalances of skin microorganisms, which can and are associated with skin pathologies. Dysbiosis (also referred to as dysbacteriosis) refers to a microbial imbalance or maladaptation of the flora on or inside the body and may be attributed to exogenous and endogenous factors. There is a vast complexity of circumstances surrounding the development of skin disorders and and in particular - acne and the many sub-types of acniform presentations. The relationship of acne, sebum and the microbiome is also a complex synergistic relationship. It is not always clearly determined whether an imbalance in the composition of the skin microbiome leads to pathologies of the skin - or whether underlying host factors or pathologies result in skin microbiome dysbiosis. Profoundly - it is also more complicated than the discontinuance of foods such as dairy, sugar or gluten components - as each composition of the internal flora and microbiota is unique to each individual, and biomarkers should be ascertained. Additionally, an abnormal barrier and an elevated surface pH are universal characteristics of almost all inflammatory skin disorders, including all presentations of the adult eczemas, psoriasis, and related cornification disorders. What's in your skin care products? đź’«Biomimicry describes innovations inspired by nature. It involves the evaluation and interpretation of natural phenomena, evolutionary processes, and climatic considerations. These concepts are evaluated and considered for adaptations in product formulation. The term biomimicry used in the laboratory setting refers to highly technological extraction techniques that preserve the entire plant profile including all components and actives of a plant.

🌿 The biomimetic concept is much aligned with the spagyric distillation process employed in traditional herbalism for centuries. The process does not damage the plant's bio-matrix and preserves the integrity of the plant’s attributes. Biomimicry will not macerate or use decomposing plant materials, guaranteeing that the point of extraction happens during the most optimum time of the plant’s life cycle, which maintains the stability and integrity of the phytocompounds. This creates a synergistic relationship between the plant’s compounds at a cellular level while accommodating for individual skin needs. 🦠

At Naturophoria - we focus on the synergism of ingredients, products, protocols and treatment to help support functional aspects of skin health and wellness.

Our primary focus is the resolution of skin barrier alterations caused by product incompatibility by ingredients that compromise the biological integrity of the microbiome, lipid matrix and stratum corneum. These are primary considerations that lend to the development of the majority of skin concerns .

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that’s found in all cells of your body. Your body needs cholesterol to make hormones and other substances, but having too much of it in your blood is linked to higher risks of heart disease and stroke.

The science of corneotherapy demonstrates that protecting the skin barrier is crucial in minimizing transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and supporting moisturization. The term "moisturizer" is often used interchangeably with "emollient. " Most moisturizers contain water and humectants to hydrate the skin. It's important to note that many ingredients can evaporate or wear off due to incompatible combinations and lesser-quality cosmetic bases.

In the past, moisturizers have included occlusive agents like lanolin, petrolatum, beeswax, and oils to create a barrier on the skin's surface. This barrier reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and helps prevent water evaporation from the outermost layer of the skin (the stratum corneum). While modern moisturizers may contain various innovative ingredients, their primary purpose is still to support the skin's natural restoration process by addressing TEWL. However, many commercial retail formulas lack sufficient concentrations of beneficial ingredients or may contain undesirable additives and preservatives, which could weaken the skin barrier instead of repairing it.

Skin science and comprehensive skin assessment are at the crux of all consultations regarding skin concerns and product selections. About the MC1R Gene - Our skin color is determined by our genetics, which affects the production of melanocytes and the melanin ratio. Various aspects of pigmentation, like freckles and their placement on the body, are linked to familial traits. Over 80 gene variants in the MC1R gene and over 150 additional variants have been identified that have a direct or indirect effect on skin color. People with red hair and freckles are likely to have one mutant MC1R gene allele, and some of these alleles have been associated with conditions like albinism, vitiligo, skin cancer, heat sensitivity, and birthmarks. Mutations in the MC1R gene are common in Northern European populations, with around 50% carrier prevalence in the United Kingdom and 25% overall in the United States. Some of these gene variants are strongly linked to the formation of freckles in people from various ethnic backgrounds. Due to genetic changes involving the MC1R gene, redheads produce more of the human pigment called pheomelanin. The MC1R gene regulates skin pigmentation, UV responses, melanoma risk, and other cellular interactions.

Ubiquinone- Co-Enzyme COQ10:

It has been suggested frequently in the last decade that CoQ10 supplementation can improve the symptoms of mitochondrial aging through metabolic bioenergetics. Through the natural aging process, acquired CoQ10 levels in the body will decrease. As oxidative stress is a marker for age related diseases and cellular senescence, CoQ10 has the ability to function as an electron carrier in the mitochondrial transport chain, as well as performing plasma membrane activities, gene modulation, and other co factor tasks with vitamin A and C.
CoQ10 helps to protect the skin against free radicals known to activate the protein kinase pathway that produces matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) (collagenase) therefore damaging collagen fibers. When used in tandem with tocopherol, it may inhibit the expression and production of fibroblast collagenase, as well as the regeneration of tocopherol. CoQ10 Performs as a multi-faceted antioxidant within subcellular membranes offering protection against UVA-induced collagen degradation. COQ10 concentration levels are quite low in the skin- however there is a 10-fold concentration in the epidermis than the dermis. COQ10 is found in SSL skin surface lipids of the stratum corneum.

Erin Madigan -Fleck NMD / Naturophoria

Welcome to my business page! I am a naturopath, esthetician, licensed esthetic instructor, national educator, lecturer and author. My practice Naturophoria, specializes in the holistic and integrative approach to dermatological skin care, and skin wellness using Dermatherapy principals. Dermatherapy combines naturopathy, nutritional coaching and integrative skin therapeutics to address some of the most common and problematic skin conditions. The goal is to create “homeostasis” to the skin and not just address the management of symptoms. Through consultation & evaluation, emphasis is placed on addressing the biological dynamics and arriving at a comprehensive program to address individual needs. The protocols that are utilized include both holistic and integrative approaches to encourage skin health and vitality. Functional cosmeceuticals, biocompatible skin products, and both traditional & alternative protocols are also an integral part of dermatherapy.
