At just 11 years old, I experienced a loss that would quietly shape the course of my life.
My great-grandmother, Mary M. Brown, —someone I loved deeply—passed away from a gynecologic cancer. She was strong, vibrant, and otherwise healthy. But she had a deep fear of doctors, and because of that, she did not seek the care that may have helped save her life.
Cancer didn’t just take her from me—it opened my eyes.
In that moment, I made a promise, even if I didn’t fully understand it yet:
That I would dedicate my life to making sure no one loses their life to fear… or to a disease that can be addressed with knowledge, access, and compassionate care.
That promise is why I became a physician.
And it is why I continue to show up for my patients every single day.
It is also why I am participating in Relay for Life.
This cause is deeply personal, and it represents something bigger than all of us—the fight for awareness, early detection, and support for those impacted by cancer.
We are now in the final days of our campaign, and I am asking for your support as we work to reach our goal.
If this story moves you, I invite you to stand with us—whether through a donation, sharing our mission, or simply honoring someone you love. Please make your donation
Together, we can continue to make a difference.
With gratitude,
Dr. Monica J.R. Williams
