Do you have chronic inflammation? Do you have muscular pain or tightness that hasn’t gone away in a long time?

It’s possible there is old inflammation in the tissue causing the discomfort. When there is lack of drainage at this point, it can be difficult to address on your own even with a proper exercise routine. When you add in a different stimulation - that your body is not used to, it helps wake up the area and reminds it to do something about it.

Myofascial therapy and infrared therapy is an example of that extra stimulation. The infrared sauna helps these drainage points in your tissue to get rid of the old pain or muscle tightness. New circulation is promoted in these areas unlike before. It’s a great combination with your normal exercise routine as well because it enhances those benefits.

An example would be when you are feeling soreness after a workout, these points have to drain on their own. Sometimes it takes longer than other days, the infrared is a way to subside this even quicker.

Some can handle high sensory inputs than others.

Some have a lower tolerance because of their heightened awareness or because of avoiding pain signals.

When you are continually taught something is painful- “is not normal” or should be avoided, then myofascial therapy can be a learning process for you to understand.

Desensitizing these areas of discomfort brings correction to the body. It allows you to learn how to breathe and release discomfort with your breath. This typically reflects how quickly someone can respond to treatment. Learning how you do not have to identify with it anymore.

Become hopeful. Trust in your body’s intelligence.

It’s the therapist role to know when and where this should be tolerated. Listening to your responses is important for lasting results.

Most people take the route of trying different treatments, adjustments that don’t hold, dry needling, other bodywork treatments then they find myofascial therapy. It is your journey. Not to say these other therapies do not work, but when they don’t, it’s a continuous search for what else can work when it doesn’t. Or it gives a “bit of relief”, only a small % better, then you’re continually needing to do the thing to feel any better. You have to go through these different perspective shifts in order to grow and understand yourself better. There needs to be a change in the nervous system. Myofascial therapy allows that.

The physical body can deter change quickly but the mind needs to catch up to the change.

When you believe there can be a change then there will be. Regardless of how big or small of the change. It’s important to set aside expectations and open your mind to the idea it can be possible. It helps quality of life for sure, to be able to decompress a bit and not feel so stressed in a physical body state. The mental state catches up when you are ready.

This brings new awareness to yourself unlike before. I always hear “I didn’t know that was there”. That’s a good indication the therapist found an area that is holding stress without you realizing. Once you realize, then you can let it go!

What is fascia?

When you research fascia, there may be a lot of information that comes up and it’s confusing to the average person’s level of understanding.

These are the different names of the receptors in the muscular and joint system of the body. Upon autopsy, there are a lot of findings how connective tissue (fascia) has the most nerve endings deep within the muscles, as deep as the bone. With these nerve endings you can stimulate a lot more change versus if you work other areas with less receptors.

During a treatment, we are trying to find the most receptor change possible so there can be more change of sensory awareness to your brain. When your brain notices that area(s) needs stimulation again, there is drastic change in the body almost instantaneously. It’s all about reaching to them in a certain technique. When proper technique is applied, it can be a very intense feeling but the amount of blood flow and recovery speaks for itself after the session.

My name is Ayanna, the licensed massage therapist here at Heal Through Balance. My passion is in guiding others back to a grounded, healthy body.

Myofascial therapy is a tool that allows us to become more aware of the tension we are constantly holding. The only way to notice the shift is when it’s relieved, there are many ways to do this as part of your self care routine. Pain is the way your body speaks to you to let you know your attention needs to be placed elsewhere. Pain relief comes when you notice these imbalances in the massage. It can be very simple!

By continually maintaining the health of your muscular system it enhances exercise performance, quality of life and injury prevention.
