Persistent thirst, frequent urination and weight loss can sometimes be telltale signs of Type 1 diabetes.

Our latest podcast episode cuts through the confusion around Type 1 diabetes: what it is, what it isn't, how it's diagnosed, and the signs every parent, teacher and caregiver should know. You might be parenting a child with Type 1 diabetes—like Megan, a mom who had no family history of diabetes when her teenage daughter was diagnosed earlier this year. Or maybe your child shares a classroom, dugout or birthday party circuit with someone who has Type 1 diabetes. Whether you're deep in the Type 1 diabetes world already, or just want to be a more informed adult in a child’s life, this episode will give you the knowledge—and the confidence—to do just that.

Earlier this year, the Children’s Heart Center became the first center in the Southeast to successfully implant a new extravascular defibrillator (EV-ICD) in a pediatric patient.

For 8-year-old Kyndall, this technology came at just the right time. Because of her underlying diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, Kyndall was at risk for dangerously fast heart rhythms that can lead to sudden cardiac arrest. Unlike traditional defibrillators, which require more complex placement, the EV-ICD is less invasive and can reduce long-term complications for young patients. In the procedure, electrophysiologist Dr. Robert Whitehill and his team successfully implanted the device—helping Kyndall get back to being a kid.

Fueled by compassion, 11 of our nurses recently traveled more than 1,300 miles to Guatemala to provide pediatric care in the communities of Iztapa and Xojola. ✈️🩺

Alongside local healthcare workers, they provided wellness checks for more than 300 children, led handwashing workshops in classrooms and delivered suitcases full of donated supplies—from medicine and hygiene kits to crayons and coloring books.

They returned home with more than just a lifetime of memories but fuller hearts, stronger bonds and a deeper commitment to the work they do every day at Children’s.

Physicians at our Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center recently performed Georgia’s first commercial gene therapy transplant.

Josh has had beta thalassemia, an inherited blood disorder that causes severe anemia and requires blood transfusions every three weeks, since birth. Previously, the only cure would have been a bone marrow transplant from a sibling donor, but since Josh was adopted, our doctors were able to use his own stem cells instead.

This new treatment is a game changer for kids like Josh. “This is just the beginning for patients with beta thalassemia as well as other genetic disorders,” said Dr. Jeanne Boudreaux, Director, Comprehensive Thalassemia Center, who's been treating Josh since being adopted and arriving in the U.S. when he was 5 years old. “Our teams at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center are working hard to find other avenues for gene therapy to continue to change the lives of our patients.”
