Here comes Thanksgiving in just a few days. For those of you who will spend time around the dining table with family members whose political opinions differ significantly from your own, this article is for you. There’s an interactive section and a conclusion with suggestions for how to navigate rather than avoid conversation:

I don’t know if I agree with every one of his examples, but I think the bottom line encouragement to embrace opportunities for growth rather than complacency is a good one. Why squander the opportunity for new experiences and an improved sense of self and well-being in a world that offers so much more than just working a 9-5, paying bills, and scads of negativity. Look around. Explore.

The Dangers of Falling Into The Trap of Complacency There’s a saying that goes a little something like this. One of the most dangerous times in a man (or woman’s) life is when he has just achieved a worthwhile goal. After achieving that goal, he should then immediately replace it with another wo...

Basically, don’t wait to do anything that’s important to you.

I'm approaching what everyone likes to call the "halfway" point, which is a bit of a cruel joke because 50 isn't halfway, it's much more than that. Who the hell lives to be 100?

There's a saying in 12-step programs, "Move a muscle, change a thought." Here's an article about the possible connection between busy hands and a happier brain:

Occupying our hands - through work, chores or art - can engage our brains and alleviate anxiety

So, you think you aren’t negative. You believe yourself to be a positive person, able to make lemonade outta of lemons.

Well, science is saying we ain’t so positive if we use these 3 words “I have to”.

Apparently this triggers negative vibes to our grey matter and makes it less possible that we will actually do what “we have to”.

They suggest, instead, to say “I get to” before any task we want to maintain and turn into a habit. I say, give it a try this week & then check in on Friday and let me know how it went. 😘

More on grief and resources...
When I posted the link yesterday about what to say to someone grieving, I wasn’t thinking about the fact that today I would be attending an all-day workshop on grief and grieving!

David Kessler is leading the workshop. He has been for decades a pre-eminent researcher, teacher, and provider of grief and ways to manage it and has written several books on the subject (including two co-authored with Elizabeth Kübler-Ross). He offered simple advice from his experience:

“Just love them. If they’re in grief that will do wonders. Just love them exactly how they’re doing.”

When he met Mother Teresa years ago, she said to him that what the dying need is very simple: tender loving care. And so do those who grieve.

He has a web site with resources: Grief.com.
He also has links to two 15-minute videos for understanding grief and loss in general and specifically what comes up during holidays:
www.AboutGrief.com
www.HolidayGrief.com

We also received instruction from Paul Denniston in several yoga poses that help move emotion through the body. They are powerful. He offers demonstrations on his web site GriefYoga.com (in addition to videos with full classes that he sells).

A while ago I shared a similar post, but I really think this type of message bears repeating. It’s so hard on grieving people when well-meaning friends offer them clichés and platitudes, but it’s also difficult for friends to know just what to say. In the link below a man shares advice based on his experiences after his father died.

In addition let me share a powerful quote from a woman whose child died:

My child died. I don't need advice. All I need is for you to gently close your mouth, open wide your heart and walk with me until I can see in color again. ~ Angela Miller

When my father died, people around me tried to help me. They saw my total, alarming devastation, and in their urgency to alleviate some of it, did what good people do when other people they care for are grieving: they said things. And often the things they said, as birthed from a beautiful place as....

Okay. Over the years I've posted a billion articles about the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of exercise. For those of you who think, "I hate running" or "I don't have the money for a gym membership or classes or a personal trainer," or, "I don't have time!" I want to share an idea with you: free workout videos on YouTube that you can do any time of the day or night in the privacy of your own home. There are lots and lots and lots of options; you can do your own search for what suits you. But I'll point you to a place you can start: Fitness with PJ. Although her target audience is women over 40, her workouts would be great for just about anyone. She warms you up, works you out--with great instruction, cuing, and more moderate options--and cools you down; she offers a variety of types, length, and intensity of workouts; and she's funny!

And for those of you who have your own exercise outlets already: Right on! Keep it up! It's preventive medicine for a multitude of what ails us. (Feel free to share your favorite form of exercise in a comment below.)

Here's a link to PJ's YouTube channel:

The tough love trainer, for the not so tough. Making you fit. For life. I don't care if you stopped and started exercise for most (or all) of your life. I do...
