ABOUT SWEDISH & DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE
Massage is a relaxing, therapeutic treatment that has been around for thousands of years. In fact, the word "massage" comes from the greek root "masso" which means "to touch." Many people consider massage a luxury, but it has many important health benefits, especially when used as part of your regular wellness routine. It can relax the whole body, loosen tight muscles and relieve tired and aching muscles, increase flexibility and range of motion, diminish chronic pain, calm the nervous system, lower blood pressure and heart rate, enhance skin tone, assist in recovery from injury and illness, strengthen the immune system, reduce headaches and mental stress, improve concentration, promote restful sleep, aid in mental relaxation, and greatly reduce overall stress. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR MASSAGE
Massages are performed in a private room with low light and soothing music on a bed-like table covered in sheets and blankets. After a short interview about what you and your body need, you will be given time to undress privately and get comfortably settled on the table under a sheet and blanket. Generally people remove all of their clothing, but underpants can be left on depending on your level of comfort. Know that you will always be covered modestly with a sheet. Depending on your needs, there are different types of massage you can get. You don't have to know exactly what you want, but here are some basics to help you know your options and choose how long a session is best for you. You can choose to have a full body "swedish" style massage, meaning you will get work done on your back, legs, feet, arms, hands, shoulders, neck, and face. Each area will be undraped as it's being worked, and covered again afterwards. This style is definitely therapeutic and can have some focus in specific areas of your choice, but it is mainly designed for general relaxation. If you have a specific area that needs a lot of work, you can choose to get a more focused "deep tissue" massage. This means mainly that the whole massage will be concentrated in one area, it does not necessarily mean that the pressure will be harder. This is generally still relaxing, but can be more intense and is usually best for people with chronic tension in one specific area (for example neck/shoulders, or feet/legs, or hips/low back) or for people recovering from an injury. If you choose to get a 90 minute massage, you can more easily mix the 2 styles as needed. For example, you could spend a whole 30 minutes on your neck and still get a full body along with it. It should never be painful or uncomfortable for any reason, and you should always feel free to communicate about your needs and ask questions before, during, and after your session.
