Sometimes the nervous system just needs a small signal that it’s safe to settle. A few simple shifts can help interrupt stress and bring the body back toward balance.
Looking out at the horizon gives your eyes and nervous system a wider field of view. When we’re stressed, our focus narrows. Letting your gaze soften and expand can help the body move out of that tunnel-vision state.
Lengthening the exhale is one of the quickest ways to calm the body. The inhale gently stimulates the system, while a slower exhale encourages the nervous system to slow down.
Unclenching the jaw can release more tension than most people realize. The jaw often tightens when we’re stressed, and letting it soften can send a signal to the rest of the body to do the same.
Shaking out your hands may seem simple, but movement helps discharge built-up tension. Even a few seconds of shaking can help release some of the stress your body is holding.
Putting your bare feet on the ground helps bring awareness back into the body. Feeling the contact with the earth can be surprisingly regulating, especially when the mind feels busy or overwhelmed.
You don’t have to do all of these. Sometimes one small reset is enough.
Save this for the next time your body needs a moment to settle.
