What would you do if you walked up to a scene where an unresponsive person was laying on the ground? According to the American Heart Association - CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) procedures, you would:
1. Make sure the scene is safe - Anytime you are attempting to help someone going through an emergency situation such as cardiac arrest, you should always ensure your safety is a priority.
2. Check for responsiveness – Firmly tap on the person’s shoulder while screaming are you ok, are you ok? If the person does Not respond,
3. Call 911 and yell for help - If you have a cell phone, dial 911, place it on speaker phone, and lay phone on the ground next to you.
4. Check for breathing & pulse – quickly scan for breathing by looking for the rise & fall of the person’s chest and check for the pulse if you know how to. If there is no apparent breading or pulse, follow CPR instructions from the 911 emergency dispatcher and if you are certified in CPR and know how to perform it, begin CPR or hands only CPR.
