As melanated folx, our bodies, being, & expression have been denied - regard, access, the right to BE, & inhibit space. Weβve been conditioned to be martyrs of pain & indignation, making joy an idea outside of ourselves. A concept to be experienced only in doses, if ever - deduced to blocks on the calendar, to be earned with great justification, deemed only deserving at the high cost of performance.

What if we centered joyβ¦daily? JOY, the pure inner exuberance & expression of full happiness. Immersing ourselves for no reason other than pure pleasure. A choice? An act of self-love, liberation, & healing? This may seem absurd & literally feel unsettling for those that have experienced , & .

has been described as "finding the positive nourishment within self & others that is a safe & healing place. A way of resting the body, mind, & spirit in response to the traumatic, devastating & life-altering racialized experiences that Black people continue to encounter.β

This is contrary of being dismissive of our pain & collective atrocities, but creating intentionality in our response - choosing autonomy to exist in our fullness. Joy IS the processing of the pain.

I took the summer βoffβ to play, create, linger, & perfect my wash & go (cuz this Georgia humidity π€¦πΎββοΈ). I had to reaffirm centering my Blackity Black Joy as a value for my Self & work. In full transparency, that also meant giving myself permission & grace to play (on most days) as opposed to writing. Trusting that it would hit at the right time. So this feels befitting to share on .
Simple acts like laughter, dancing, singing, inviting gratitude are some of our earliest forms of expressive meditation that promote health, elevate mood, relieve stress & offer beautiful gateways to move through & beyond areas of stuckness, disconnection, & disassociation.
