This Black History Month, Hollifield Mortuary proudly honors Arthur Mitchell, a visionary whose life was a testament to excellence, discipline, and courage.
Arthur Mitchell broke barriers as the first Black principal dancer at the New York City Ballet, but his greatest legacy was what he built for others. In 1969, he founded Dance Theatre of Harlem, transforming classical ballet into a space where Black dancers could be seen, trained, and celebrated at the highest level. What many said could not be done, he made world-class.
At Hollifield Mortuary, we believe Black history is not only about survival,it is about mastery, institution building, and leaving the world better than we found it. Arthur Mitchell embodied all three. His work reminds us that dignity, representation, and legacy matter.
We honor his life, his vision, and the generations uplifted because he dared to take center stage.
